What Else Can I Do?

My birthday - 8/1951, wife's birthday 4/1951. Janice applied for her benefit to start next month - 4/2021.
I called to suspend payment of my benefit (and her spousal benefit) which I started at my FRA (66 years).

The first three reps I spoke with told me it wasn't allowed even though I pointed them to the SS website page explaining that I can suspend my benefit. I was disconnected from the second 2 reps when asking how to pursue this after long waits while they researched.

Finally the 4th rep agreed to put in the request after about 40 minutes on this 4th . . . Read More

What Have I Done To Myself By Filing For My Benefits Early?

Hi Larry, just as I turned 62 I found myself without work and did not know my future prospects. In order to survive I filed for Social Security. I found good work again but collected a total of five months of benefits before I requested the benefits to stop. I did not know that I could pay that money back within one year, and I missed that window. That was over two years ago. My full retirement age is 2 years from now, and I will turn 70 in less than 6 years. My question is, what have I done to myself with the 5 months of benefits, and how can I maximize my benefits at full . . . Read More

Can I Request To Be Paid On The First Wednesday Of The Month Instead Of The Second Wednesday?

If I get benefits based on my wife who died from cancer that pay me 2nd Wednesday of every month do I have any option to get paid the 1st Wednesday of every month???

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. The answer to your question is no. For most people, the day of the month on which their benefits are paid is determined by the day of birth of the worker on whose record the benefits are paid. If the worker was born in the first 10 days of a month, payments from that account would be paid on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. If the worker was born from the 11th . . . Read More

Can I Get My Husband's SSI?

My husband get SSI
I'm not working
Can I get his SSI

Hi. First off, I don't know if you mean that your husband receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or Social Security benefits. If your husband receives SSI, then the only way that you could get SSI is if you meet the SSI eligibility requirements yourself. SSI is a needs based benefit, and the requirements for SSI eligibility can be found on the following Social Security website: https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/.

If, on the other hand, your husband . . . Read More

If You're On Partial Disability Can You Keep It If You're Going To Have Surgery?

If you are on partial disability but going to have surgery can you keep the disability?

Hi. I don't know what you mean by 'partial disability'. Social Security only pays disability benefits to people who are considered unable to do all types of work. So, if what you are receiving is a disability benefit from Social Security, then having surgery wouldn't have any effect on your benefits unless as a result of the surgery you become capable of returning to work.

Best, Jerry

Disability benefits

Hi. I'm sorry to hear about your illness. I assume that you are referring to Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, in which case the answer to your question is probably no. SSDI benefit rates are computed based on an average of a variable number of a person's past years of earnings. The number of years used in the computation depends on your age at the time . . . I filed for disability in Georgia. My lawyer was Blake Tiller, he became a state senator during my case. Me and my husband were contract driver for the DOD, RAM loads , and energy . We hauled anything the government needed., Mostly for Military. I passed out on 1/29/15, went to see neurologist, which I have been seeing, and told her I passed out 2 times. She started running test. Would not sign off for me to drive a Rig again. So I filed for SSID . . . Read More
