What Would Be The Benefit Of Me Filing For Disability?

Im going to be 62 in May and am going to retire because i dont feel like i can do my job anymore. My doctor said he would support my diasability. If social security bebfits are approximately 1365 and. I'll get a pension of 1039. What would be the benefit of filing for diability?

Hi. Unreduced Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits are paid at a rate of 100% of the disabled worker's primary insurance amount (PIA). Social Security retirement benefits are also paid at a rate of 100% of the worker's PIA, but only if the worker starts drawing their retirement benefits at their full retirement age (FRA).

In other words, qualifying for SSDI benefits could allow you to start collecting your full unreduced Social Security retirement benefit rate, or PIA, early. Your SSDI benefits would then convert to regular retirement benefits when you reach FRA, meaning you'd then receive an unreduced benefit rate for the rest of your life. On the other hand, if you don't qualify for SSDI benefits and if you start drawing your Social Security retirement benefits at age 62, your benefit rate will be reduced for age to roughly 71% of your PIA.

Best, Jerry
