Should My Wife Be Eligible For Unreduced Spousal Benefits If She Has A Disabled Child In Her Care?
I am 66 and just began collecting SS in April $2,272 . My spouse, 64, has been collecting since 62 $602 on her account. We have a disabled 23 year old child in care who is on SSI since 18. My wife was told by soc sec worker that her benefit after increase for spousal benefit, is reduced by the early filing discount.
My question: 1. if a “child in care” then age of the spouse is not a factor, so shouldn't she receive the full 50% of my PIA without reduction for her early filing? 2. Is (was) she eligible on her own account since age 62 to no reduction for early filing . . . Read More

Can I Receive SSDI On My Own Record And Also File For Benefits On My Deceased Husband's Record?
I am a 60 year old female collecting ssdi and ssd widow insurance. My husband is deceased. Can I collect my ssdi and also apply for my deceased husbands ssi benefits?
Hi,
If I understand you correctly, you are already receiving both Social Security disability (SSDI) and disabled widow's benefits. So, unless you were widowed more than once, it sounds like you are already drawing your survivor benefits from your deceased husband's record. If you are entitled to both SSDI and disabled widow's or widow's benefits, Social Security pays you your full SSDI . . . Read More

How Should I Report A Problem In SSA's Online Application Process?
I recently discovered what seems to be a systemic problem with the SSA online application for spousal benefits and would like to bring this to the attention of an appropriate person at SSA. My wife applied online but was awarded retirement rather than spousal benefits. We have now been told by three different SSA workers that this is a common problem with online spousal benefit applications. All three also said that my wife must file a withdrawal of application form, wait for SSA to approve the withdrawal, and then apply in person for spousal benefits.

How Can I Know If My Father's Disabilty Benefits Have Converted To Retirement Benefits?

Hi,
Your father could check with Social Security, or you could do so with his authorization. Another way to know would be from your father's claim number, which should appear on any notices he's received from . . . Read More

Can I Receive Spousal Benefits Even If I'm Already Drawing On My Own Record?
I started collecting my SS benefit at age 62 which was in 2015. My husband has just turned 66 and has filed for his SS benefit. He is currently working and is planning to continue until he's 70. From what I have read, he will get his full benefit because he is 66. My question is even though I am collecting my benefits, can I also collect on his? His has a much larger benefit than mine and financially could use the extra money. If so, will my benefit go back to my original lower amount when I turn 70?
Hi,
You could potentially be eligible for an . . . Read More

What Happens If I Remarry After I Start Receiving Divorced Spousal Benefits?
I am divorced after 24 years of marriage. I am 57 years old and engaged to be married. My ex-husband makes significantly more than I do. If I do not get married, I know I can collect my ex-husband's SS. My question is: What happens if I get married after I start collecting my ex-husband's SS? Can I still collect at his rate or does it revert back to what my rate would be?
Hi,
Assuming that your ex is still living when you remarry, and unless your new husband is receiving a certain type of Social Security benefit when you marry ( . . . Read More

If I Remarry, Could My New Wife Receive The Widower's Benefits That I Now Receive In The Event Of My Death?
collecting dead spouse social security (larger than mine) want to marry but if I die, will new wife get the social sercurity I now receive
Hi,
No, your new wife could never qualify for benefits on your deceased wife's record. However, your new wife could potentially file for widow's benefits on your record if you die first, even if you weren't receiving your own retirement benefits prior to your death.
Best, Jerry

Can I Switch To Drawing Survivor Benefits On My Ex-Husband's Record?
My ex spouse and I divorced in 2003, after more than 10 years of marriage. I began receiving social security disability on or right around that time. He never remarried. I remarried in 2013 and my husband died 364 days later. I began receiving survivor benefits after his death. My ex husband also passed away in 2015, after receiving on one SS retirement check. Can I change which spouse I receive the survivor benefits on,as my ex had considerable more income. Thank you Larry for any assistance you can provide me. Donna

Is There Any Way To Receive Benefits And Let My Widow's Benefits Grow?
I am 59 years old and just lost my husband in March of this year. He was 55. He was also the major breadwinner. I worked throughout our marriage but mostly part-time. As I understand it. I am not able to receive widow's benefits until I turn 60. Is there a way to receive benefits while letting his social security grow. I plan on continuing work also. Thank you.
Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss.
In order to receive the highest possible widow's rate, you would file for those benefits at your full retirement age (FRA) for widow's benefits, which is . . . Read More

Am I Eligible For Widower's Benefits?
My wife started receiving social security when she was 62. She passed away before she turned 63. She was 6 months older than me. I received a $250 death benefit and was told i was ineligible to receive a benefit from her. My eligibility for my SS is at 66. I'm now 64. My wife has been deceased for 27 months.
I thought i could receive her benefit until I turned 66 and then receive mine. it might be a play on words to say retirement vs. survivor or widower. I've had friends tell me that i should be receiving something from my deceased wife. Please advise on your . . . Read More
