I’m am 61 in March. I have been on disability for 10 years or more? My husband pass August 2017. He was still working when he passed. Am I elgable to receive benefits from him along with my disabilities check?Things r hard!

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

You could only qualify for additional benefits on your husband's record if his full benefit rate or primary insurance amount (PIA) was higher than your own Social Security disability benefit (SSDI) rate. And if it is, it would likely be advantageous for you to apply for widow's benefits as soon . . . Read More

Can I File For Spousal Benefits Now?

After not having worked for 20 years, I began drawing my social security benefits at age 62 while my husband began his benefits at FRA. I unexpectedly went back to work at age 64. My husband is also still working. I will be 67 in August. He is 68. May I now file for spousal benefits at this point? I would double my benefit if I were to receive 1/2 of his. Or is there a better scenario for us? Also, are spousal benefits calculated on your benefit before medicare insurance is deducted, or after?

Thanks!!

Can You Help With My Husband's Social Security?

Greetings, My hubby was injured in 12/2010 in a bombing incident in Afghanistan while he was a cultural advisor helping our troops. We applied for social security disability at age 62. He was making over $ 200K at the time and 3 years prior to that, and a decent amount in the previous 25 years or so. I specifically asked if applying for disability now will effect his retirement benefit when he turns 65. I was told by a few Reps NO. Although according to the calculator based on his income he was to receive $ 2800.00 Instead he received $ 1500.00 Then when he reached retirement . . . Read More

How Would The Ticket To Work Program Affect My Benefits?

I am 64 years old and on SSDI. My husband was on SSDI when he died at 56 years of age(2011) so I also collect survivors benefits. I started receiving SSDI and survivors in 2014. I wish to take advantage of the "Ticket to Work" program. How does this affect my benefits? And is there a way to increase my current Soc Sec benefits when I turn 66 or by suspending and waiting until I am 70. Will your software work for me? I have already spent a lot for a CFP and this appears to be beyond her knowledge. Thank YOU!

Hi,

I'm not that familiar with the 'Ticket . . . Read More

Can I Now Claim Benefits On My Ex-Husband's Record?

I have a teachers retirement pension from California. I divorced my husband after 35 years of marriage and I have never remarried. I began collecting my teachers pension in 1996 and it will continue for the rest of my life. My ex-husband who worked in the private sector his whole life recently passed away. His wages throughout his work life were subject to social security withholding and would have been defined as highly compensated. Can I now claim social security based and my ex-husbands earnings and be exempted from the windfall elimination provisions of social security. I . . . Read More

Do I Need To Contact Social Security To Let Them Know That I'll No Longer Be Working?

Hi Larry, I am 63 and presently working but signed up to begin my SS benefits in January 2018. My income for the year would have been $33,000 and they are suspending my benefits until September. I will no longer be employed after July. Do I need to contact SS to let them know that I will no longer be working and to not suspend my benefits? Will I get my suspended benefits of 2018 in 2019 since I did not reach the $17040 threshold in? Thank you for any help!

Hi,

Yes, it certainly sounds like you should contact Social Security to amend your 2018 . . . Read More

Would A Marriage Lasting 9 Years And 10 Months Qualify For Divorced Spousal Benefits?

Hello:
For me to get my retirement + ex spouse, one needs to be 10 years in marriage.
My question is 9 years and 10 months does not qualify? I guess I am really lucky?

Hi,

You must have been married for at least 10 full years in order to qualify for divorced spousal benefits. In some states and depending on the year of the divorce, however, a divorce decree is not final until some period of time after the date of the decree. You may want to check out the following summary of state laws on divorce dates from Social Security's operations . . . Read More

Is The Information Given Out By SSA Staff Correct?

I called the SSA regarding applying for SSA retirement benefits, and I was informed by the representative that if I filed after my full retiement age (fra), 66 plus 2 months, that if I wanted to increase my monthly benefit by filing after my FRA, that I would need to wait a full year to get any increase in monthly benefits. It is my understanding your montly benefit would increase each MONTH that you wait past your FRA; and that I need not wait the full 12 months as I was informed by SSA. Is the information given out by SSA staff correct? It seems every time I call them I get a . . . Read More

Am I Eligible To Receive Spousal Benefits On My Deceased Ex's Record?

I married my current husband at 60+ years of age and am currently 80 years old. My ex husband of 38 years died July 2016. Am I eligible to receive spousal benefits?

Hi,

Yes, it sounds like you would qualify for surviving divorced spousal benefits as long as your ex-husband's benefit rate was higher than your own rate. Your current marriage wouldn't bar you from potentially qualifying for survivor benefits on a prior spouse's record as long as your remarriage occurred at age 60 or later ( . . . Read More

Am I Eligible For Spousal Benefits And When Should I Start Them?

My husband, born in 1952, has been on SS disability for a few years... he will turn 66 in Sept so his disability will become just SS at that time remaining the same amount as I understand it. I was born in 1951 and turned 66 this past Dec. but have decided to wait until age 70 to begin my SS benefits. Am I eligible for spousal benefits and if so when could I start them? It was my understanding I had to wait until he reached FRA but something I read here suggested people can sometimes draw based on a spouse on SS disability. Is that true (perhaps I misinterpreted what was said) . . . Read More
