Shoud I Contact Social Security To See If I'm Getting All I'm Supposed To?

I am 69. I applied online for Social Security Benefits when I was 62. I served in the Air Force from 19 June 1968 until 30 June 1994.
I'm not sure the online application I did let me enter my Active Duty Military Service time. I never had to show anyone my DD214.
Should I contact my Soc Sec Office and ask them to look at my record to see if I am receiving all I am supposed to, or did they ask
me on the online application about my miltary service? Thank you.

You can double check with Social Security if you want to, but since . . . Read More

Will Retirement Income Reduce My SSDI Benefits?

I am 59 and receiving ssdi. My ex is 62 and wants to retire early. He has 2 retirement funds that I will be receiving some money from. Will this retirement income reduce my ssdi benefits?

Hi,

No. The only type of income that could affect your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits is earned income, specifically wages or self-employment earnings.

What Do You Think Of My Strategy?

I just finished the latest version of "Get What's Yours." Thank you for writing this book. It was most informative. But, I have a situation that I don't believe was covered in the book:

I am 61 with a birthday of 3/30. My wife is 62 and her birthday is 5/5. Her age-70 retirement benefit is less than half of mine (as is her full retirement benefit.) We are not eligible to grandparented under the new law to file-and-suspend or to be excluded from deeming.

Based on the book, under current law, my best strategy seems to be the following:

1. We should both . . . Read More

What Will Happen To My SSI When I Turn Age 62?

I am currently drawing SSI $750.00 a month. I am 59. what happens when I turn 62 with my retirement SS which is not much. I did not make enough to draw SSID. Will I still receive my SSI and also get what little amount I will be qualified for, probably in the $400.00 a month. What is the rules on this.

Hi,

If you have enough credits to qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, you'll be required to file for them at age 62 when you are first eligible or else your SSI (Supplemental Security Income) will stop. One of the conditions for SSI . . . Read More

Can Social Security Withhold What I Contributed Because I Have A Decent Savings Account?

This is my background. I am a 66 year old American citizen. I worked 26 years overseas so I was not able to contribute to Social Security Insurance during those 26 years. (I received a lump sum payment from the company I worked for. I do not receive a monthly check from that company.)
However I also worked 20 years in the states and paid into the SSI every paycheck. I am semi retired and plan to continue to work for as long as I can and will therefore have to continue to pay SSI.
My questions is this; am I eligible to receive as SSI benefits a monthly check or . . . Read More

What Rate Does Social Security Pay Until Your DRCs Are Updated And Paid?

Regarding delayed retirement credits; you indicated the SSA does not update they payments for up to 24 months regarding delayed retirement credits. If you make an initial application including the delayed retirement credits, what amount does the SSA pay for retirement until the DRC is updated and paid? Is it the PIA, or primary insurance amount which is payable until the the DRC is updated? As I understand it, you would only receive the PIA or full retirement age benefit until the DRC is calculated. After the DRC back payments, you would receive the increased amounts montly to . . . Should I Wait To File Until January 2019 To Avoid Any Income Penalty?

I will be 66 on 8/11/18. I will have w2 income of 32K and passive income of 10k prior to that date. I anticipate continue to work at the same income level for many years. I have done the math and am making the decision to take retirement at 66 rather than wait until 70. Question becomes. When and how do I contact SS to initiate retirement payments. Should i wait until January 2019 to begin collecting SS to avoid any income penalty?

Hi,

You can draw benefits starting for August 2018 regardless of how much you will earn this year, so there would be no ' . . . Read More

Can I File For My Benefits Now And Switch To Full Widow's Benefits Later?

I am 63 years old (DOB 2/1955) , my social security benefits: Now (June 2018) $700/month. At full retirement age (66 y, 2 m) $863/month. At age 70: $1,128/month.

My husband (DOB 11/1956, DOD 4/2018) recently passed away and I was told by someone at SS on the phone that my widow's benefit now is $2,532/month. At my full retirement age (they told me 66, but I've read 66 + 2 mos) my widow's benefit will be $2,926/month. The person on the phone told me to wait until 66 y.o. to collect the $2,926/month.

A financial advisor told me I can collect my $700/month NOW, and . . . Read More

Is It True That I Can Only Obtain The Minimum Pay Out From Social Security?

I have a private pension fund through the City of St Paul. When I retired in 2000, I was told I could only obtain the minimum pay out from SSA because of a Ronald Reagan ruling. Is this correct? I have been working since I was 16 as many others. My check every month is 291.00.

Hi,

Well, my assumption is that what you're referencing is the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). That amendment to the Social Security law was passed by Congress during the Reagan years.

The WEP provision can result in the use of a less generous Social Security . . . Read More

Would Collecting My Mexican Pension Affect My Social Security Disability Benefits?

Hi! I'm 59 years old and I have Parkinson's. I'm disabled and currently receiving Social Security Disability Benefits every month. I'm both a US citizen and Mexican Citizen and I'm about to start claiming my pension from Mexico at age 60. Would collecting my Mexican Pension affect my Social Security Disability benefits?

Hi,

Yes, assuming that your Mexican pension is based on your work there, then there's a good chance that drawing it could cause a reduction in your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefit rate. The reason for that is the Windfall . . . Read More
