Hi! I'm 59 years old and I have Parkinson's. I'm disabled and currently receiving Social Security Disability Benefits every month. I'm both a US citizen and Mexican Citizen and I'm about to start claiming my pension from Mexico at age 60. Would collecting my Mexican Pension affect my Social Security Disability benefits?
Hi,
Yes, assuming that your Mexican pension is based on your work there, then there's a good chance that drawing it could cause a reduction in your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefit rate. The reason for that is the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), which can cause Social Security disability and retirement benefits to be computed using a less generous formula for people who also receive a pension based on their work that was exempt from Social Security taxes. For more information on the WEP provision and it's exceptions, refer to the following Social Security publication: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10045.pdf.
Best, Jerry
