What Will Happen To My SSI When I Turn Age 62?

I am currently drawing SSI $750.00 a month. I am 59. what happens when I turn 62 with my retirement SS which is not much. I did not make enough to draw SSID. Will I still receive my SSI and also get what little amount I will be qualified for, probably in the $400.00 a month. What is the rules on this.

Hi,

If you have enough credits to qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, you'll be required to file for them at age 62 when you are first eligible or else your SSI (Supplemental Security Income) will stop. One of the conditions for SSI eligibility is that you must file for any other types of benefits for which you qualify.

When you start drawing Social Security benefits your SSI payments will be reduced essentially dollar for dollar by the amount of your Social Security. However, SSI payments aren't offset for the first $20 of other income, so if your Social Security benefit rate is lower than your SSI payment amount you'll probably end up receiving either the same total amount each month or possibly $20 more.

Best, Jerry
