Spousal Benefits

Will My Wife Get Spousal Benefits When I File On My Own Record?

Category:

My wife claimed her SS benefit at 64 and I took my spousal SS benefit at the same time. When I decide to claim my full SS benefits, will my wife's benefit be the same or will hers revert to a spousal benefit (1/2 of mine)? Thank you!

Hi,

That depends on your relative benefit rates. Your wife will continue to get her own reduced retirement benefit when you file on your own record. But, if 50% of your full retirement age rate (PIA) is higher than your wife's PIA, she could also receive the difference in those amounts as an excess spousal benefit.

Will My Wife Get Half Of My Age 70 Rate?

I am 65 years old and am thinking of delaying my retirement benefit application until age 70. The benefit estimate for me is f $2715.00 at FRA and $3584.00 at age 70.
My wife collects retirement benefits on her own record. She started benefits at her FRA. and collects $1556.20 ( before Medicare premium deductions).
Will my wife benefit, when I start collecting at age 70 be calculated as: the higher of her then current benefit amount or 50% of $3584.00?

Hi,

Can I Receive Benefits On My Husband's Record?

Category:

Hello: I am 64 years of age, soon 65, born in 1952. I have been receiving SSDI for several years. I am legally separated and soon after qualifying my husband retired, now age 70, and collects his social security. He receives almost exactly twice as much as my SSDI. Wondering if I can receive more from him now and or at his death. I expect to out live him as I am in better health, younger and my disability is hearing loss, I am so confused and have received different answers after calls to Social Security Office. Thank you!

Hi,

When Can I Apply For Spousal Benefits Only?

Category:

I am eligible and understand the principles of Restricted Application for Social Security benefits. However, I need to confirm the exact month to file for those benefits either online or in person.

Do I need to wait until I actually obtain FRA (66 years, July 2017) to claim my spousal
benefits?

Or can I apply during the typically recommended 3 month window prior to FRA with the same result and not being defaulted into benefits based on my record ?

Can this all be done online or must I do it in person?

Hi,

Can I Start Drawing Any Benefits Now At Age 60?

Category:

My husband is 84 and I am 60. He has a pension and social security but his is reduced by his pension income ($564/month). I have lived in the US legally for 14 years and I am an American Citizen. My husband is disabled and I care for him so my social security benefit would be based on his benefit (I assume) since I am 1/4 short on my benefit after working part time for 8 years. I am eligible for Canadian social insurance and CPP at 65 in Canada. Is there any way to file early in the US for me since I am not able to work while caring for him.

Can My Wife Draw Spousal Benefits At FRA And Let Her Own Benefit Rate Grow Until Age 70?

Dear Larry,

My wife, Leslie, and I have an appointment with Social Security on April 28 to apply for her spousal benefit based on my work record. She will be 66 this month, so she was 62 before 4/2/16. I am 68 and successfully filed and suspended my own SS benefit before 4/28/16. Both Leslie and I intend to defer our own SS benefits until we reach age 70. According to your book, Get What's Yours, she should qualify for spousal benefits under the "grandfather" provisions of the 2015 revisions to the SS law, until she collects her own SS benefits at age 70.
