Can I File For Spousal Benefits When My Wife For For Her Social Security?

My wife is 66 and eligible and applying for her Ss benefits. I am 68 and working and have been delaying my ss benefits to maximize at age 70. Can I apply for spousal benefits when my wife applies for her ss benefits and will getting spousal benefits now reduce my maximized benefits I am expecting at age 70

Hi,

Yes, you can. And no, drawing spousal benefits would not reduce your own age 70 benefit rate.

Before proceeding, you and your wife may want to strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to make . . . Read More

How Much Can I Earn In 2018?

I have already started drawing my SS, but plan to return to work. I will reach full retirement age (66) in January 2019. Since January 2018 is one year prior to my full retirement age, how much can I earn in 2018? Does it go off the calendar year you reach FRA or the calendar year? Just abit confused.

Hi,

Your full retirement age is 66, so starting in 2019 you can earn any amount and still be paid all of your Social Security benefits. In 2018, you can earn up to $17,040 without losing any of your benefits. If you earn more than that, you'll lose $1 . . . Read More

Is This The Way It Works?

My wife is turning 62 Nov. the 9th 2017. She is told that her first check will be delivered Jan. 10th 2018. That means she will be 62 for 2 months before she receives her first check. When she dies, if it be the first of any month, the last of any month, or the middle of any month, she will not get the Dec. check as she will be dead. So I am assuming that check will either go to her estate or will be gobbled up by our needful gov. Is this the way it works?? If it is, it is a damn shame that our Gov. finds it necessary to steal from the poor people that depend on their SS . . . Read More

Can I Switch From Divorced Spousal Benefits To Drawing Benefits On My Own Record?

I was 66 1/2 when I started receiving my ex-spouse social security benefits. I would now like to switch over to mine. Is this possible and if so what steps do I take?

Hi,

Yes, it's possible to switch to your own record if your benefit rate would be higher. In order to do so, you would need to contact Social Security to file a claim. You can make an appointment by calling 1-800-772-1213.

Before proceeding, however, you may want to strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to determine your optimal . . . Read More

Is My Plan Possible?

Larry or Jerry, I am 52, my husband is 62. I have mostly retired (at age 45). I work occasionally. Some years I add to my high 35, but only because it fills the place of summer jobs in high school. My husband is also mostly retired and makes a minimal amount of money. My estimated benefits are just a little bit lower than my husbands, but could possibly equal his if I work several more years. My thought was to have my husband wait until 70 to collect his social security, collect my spousal benefit at age 62, switch to my retirement at 67 (FRA) then collect survivor benefit upon . . . Am I Entitled To Continue Receiving SSDI?

I was getting social security disability, $26 dollars a month but I got medic aid. I was awarded 70% VA disability, $1,451 monthly and $656 retirement. Because of my VA compensation I lost my medicaid and my SSDI of $26 dollars. So my income is $1,451 plus $656 a total of $2,107. Am I entitled to continue receiving my SSDI?

Hi,

Social Security disability benefits (SSDI) aren't needs based, so your VA benefits shouldn't have caused them to stop. Are you sure that you weren't receiving SSI (Supplemental Security Income) disability payments instead? . . . Read More

Does It Make Sense To Consider Choosing A Pension Option With Spousal Benefits?

I work for a school district and will receive a pension upon retirement. I have not paid enough into social security to have any benefits of my own, so I'm not concerned about the WEP. I have three plan choices, with my husband receiving no benefits, half benefits, and full benefits if I die first. Of course, the monthly pension is greatest with no spousal benefits (roughly $3200, $3000, and $2850 respectively under the three scenarios). My husband will receive social security benefits of about $2600 per month. Due to GPO reductions, does it still make sense for me to choose a . . . Read More

Can I Take Out A Hardship Loan Based On Money I've Paid To Social Security?

Hello, I am in a really hard spot right now, as I lost my job a few months ago and my son's Dad (who has been temporarily staying with us because my ex-roommate skipped out on me,) lost his job a couple weeks ago, we have no income at all and we have no way to pay rent next month. I am currently taking trade classes so I will be employed by January but I am facing eviction before then if the bills don't get paid. I am 27 and know I have $14000 in SS. Can I take out a hardship loan? if so how do I do it.

Hi,

No, Social Security doesn't make loans. I . . . Read More

Do I Understand My Options Correctly?

I am reading Get What's Yours. I am 59 and 10 months old. I had planned on retiring at 66 and 8 months, my FRA. But now, am wondering if I am understanding your 'rules' correctly. I was married for 15 years, and have now been divorced for another 15 years. My ex made considerably more money than I have. He is 8 years older than I, turning 69 at the end of this month. he has been collecting his SS for several years now. IF I understand correctly, I can file for spousal benefits at 62, and allow my own account to continue to grow, as well as still work - at least part time - (or . . . Read More
