Can My Wife File For Her Benefits At Age 62 Then Take 50% Of My PIA When She Reaches FRA?
I am born October 1953 and plan to take SSB January 2021 (at 67y+3mo, 1y+3mo after my FRA). My wife is born May 1959 and her FRA is 66y+10mo or April 2026.
Can she take her own SSB when she turns 62 (May 2021), then take spousal benefits (50% of my PIA), at her FRA on April 2026?
Thanks
Hi,
No, she can't. Since your wife was born after January 1 1954 she'll be deemed to be filing for both her own Social Security retirement benefits and spousal benefits whenever she applies for either benefit. She could then only be paid essentially the . . . Read More

What Can Be Done To Speed Up My Payments?
Have applied for Social Security Disability 2 years ago was approved. As of this date have not received any payments, got help from Attorney still no answer sent letters out no response. want can been done.
Hi,
There's probably not much that can be done to speed up Social Security's processing. About all you can do is follow up with Social Security to see if they need anything, or ask your attorney to do so. If it drags on too long, you could also try contacting your congressional representative to see if they'd be willing to make an inquiry with . . . Read More

What Happens To All Of The Money I Paid In To Social Security If I Just Receive Widow's Benefits?
I am 70 and still work full time. My husband died recently. I will be getting his SS money, however I was receiving my SS money also and pay into it from my paycheck. SS told me I can't get both, but what about all the money I've already paid into it and still do from my paycheck?
Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss.
What Social Security told you is correct. No one can be paid more than one full Social Security benefit at the same time. If you're entitled to more than one benefit, you can only be paid the higher of the two benefit amounts.

Is My Thinking Correct On This?
Larry - I had Maximize My Social Security Analysis ran for myself and my wife. My monthly benefit would be more than my wife's monthly benefit. My question is (and as I understand it) if I waited to age 70 to start taking my Social Security and I passed away lets say at 71, my wife would start collecting at that time 100% of my monthly benefit (what I was getting) and of course she would stop receiving her monthly benefit as it was less than mine at that time. Is my thinking correct on this? Thanks.
Hi,
Yes, that's correct provided that your wife is . . . Read More

Would I Still Have The Right To Withdraw A Future Application?
Hi Larry,Thanks so much for taking our questions. My questions:
1. I had filed for Divorced Widow Benefits but found a job prior to any award letter or date of entitlement..application still showed as 'being processed'. I sent a letter to SSA to withdraw my application and they said I would have to file a Form 221 for the withdrawal to be considered, regardless of status of application. So, I did file this and the application was withdrawn.
Question: I recall Form 221 is allowed ONCE in a LIFETIME. I hope I can still avail my one time opportunity to withdraw in . . . Read More

Hi,
I'm sorry, but my expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, not stimulus payments. You may want to try researching the following IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus-tax-relief-and-economic-impact-payments.

Can I Receive Unemployment And Social Security Benefits At The Same Time?
Can I receive unemployment benefits monies and my social security benefits at the same time
Hi,
My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits. I can tell you that if you receive unemployment benefits it would have no effect on any Social Security benefits for which you might be eligible. However, I'm not sure if the reverse is true.

Hi,
Probably not. When you qualify for Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, your full benefit rate is essentially the same as what your Social Security retirement benefit rate would be if you started drawing it at full retirement age (FRA). If you continue to receive . . . Read More
