How Will Social Security Calculate The Amount To Be Repaid To Me At Full Retirement Age?

hello i repaid a total of 7,804,00 in the last 3 years from my work. i have read that after you reach full retirement age ss
gives this back to you, can you tell me how they calculate that back to you. thank-you

Hi,

Amounts withheld from a person's benefits as a result of Social Security's earnings test are not returned to the person when they reach full retirement age (FRA), at least in a direct manner.

What happens instead is that when the person reaches FRA, their Social Security retirement benefit rate, which would have been reduced . . . Read More

Can I Switch From Disability To Retirement Benefits Now That I'm 65 And 1 Month?

I have been on SS Disability since 2017. Can I Switch From SS Disability To SS Retirement Benefits Now That I'm 65 and 1 month?

Hi,

You could file an application to switch to drawing Social Security retirement benefits instead of Social Security disability (SSDI), but your monthly benefit rate will go down if you do. The reduction percentage would amount to 5/9ths of 1% for each month that you start drawing retirement benefits prior to your full retirement age (FRA). So, if for example you switch to retirement benefits 13 months before . . . Read More

Can I Try To Get Back Pay For My Children?

I got SSI in 2005 or 06 (not exactly sure), I have 2 kids, they were ages 8 and 6. Social security told me I could not collect on my kids, which I believed, but I have at least 3 friends whom have SSI just as I do and have collected on their children (one of them was even collecting on his step daughter, no blood). Can I try to get back pay on them? They are grown now, but as their momma, I would live to be able to at least start some sort of college fund for them. Thank you Larry!

Can I Collect My Social Security And Still Get My Check From The Railroad?

My husband worked for the railroad for over 40 years. He passed away in 2008. I get a check once a month. I have worked for over 50 years that paid into Social Security and I am now retired and wondered if I can collect my Social Security and still get the check from the railroad? Thank you!

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

As long as you're at least age 62 and you worked long enough to be insured for Social Security benefits, you can claim and collect those benefits. However, what will happen if you do so is that the Railroad Retirement Board ( . . . Read More

Can My Brother's Wife Get Spouse's Benefits At Age 62 And Then Change To Her SS At Full Retirement Age?

My brother is collecting his SS. His wife will be 62 next year. Can she file to get her spouses until she reaches full retirement age and then change to her SS? Thanks!

Hi,

No, she can't. If your sister-in-law files for spousal benefits she'll be deemed to also be filing for her own Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. She'll then only be eligible for essentially the higher of the two benefit rates, and her benefit rate will be reduced for age if she starts drawing before her full retirement age.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

You'll need to contact Social Security and you'll probably need to submit a certified copy of the corrected death certificate. Until Social Security offices are reopened to the public, your only . . . Read More

Can My Spouse Now Claim The Difference Between Her Benefits And Half Of My Benefits?

My spouse and I were both born in 1948. She started her social security benefits at age 62 after she retired. I am Over seventy and started taking my full benefits at 70, although I am still working part time. I took your advice and filed for 1/2 of her benefit amount when I turned 66, which was my full retirement age and did not switch to my own benefits until age 70. My question is this:

Can my spouse now now claim the difference between her benefits and 1/2 of my benefits which is several hundred dollars a month?

No. Your wife could . . . Read More

Should I File A SSA-561?

I was born in October, 1949. I was able to do a file and suspend before the deadline in April 2016. In March 2018 I received a letter from Social Security that my potential benefit had increased to $3,240.10 to give me credit for the past months that I had delayed receiving retirement benefits. Later in 2018 I started benefits and received my first check on 10/17/2018.

I have not received credit or benefits for the period January through October 2018.

Having read your answers to others regarding delayed retirement credits, I have been patient.

However, has . . . Read More
