You'll need to contact Social Security and you'll probably need to submit a certified copy of the corrected death certificate. Until Social Security offices are reopened to the public, your only options are to contact them by mail or phone. I would start out by calling them at 1-800-772-1213 to explain what happened. Hopefully, you'll be connected with a fully trained Social Security employee who will be able to get the records corrected and initiate the process of getting a refund issued.
