Is There Any Way To Get My Benefit Amount Increased?
I am on SSA Treas 310 since sept 2015. I receive $908.60 a month . I am disabled and i believe I am on SS disability??
I was told I can work as long as I make no more than $1,100/mo? I'm going to be 65 in Nov. Is there any way to get this amount increased as I cannot work ..at least not right now. Disability is very confusing, please advise. Thank you, Wendy
Hi Wendy,
I'm not sure what "SSA Treas 310" refers to, so my answer assumes that what you're drawing is Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits. It's true that you could work without . . . Read More

What Do I Do?
Hi,
i have been separated for 33 years (not legally). i understand that i can still collect a portion of my husbands social security. He is military retired and his social security payment is more than mine. i still work part time. what do i do? Do I go into a social security office?
Hi,
I assume that what you're saying is that you are still legally married and that both you and your estranged husband are drawing your own Social Security benefits. In that case if you want to file for spousal benefits your only current option is to call Social . . . Read More

If I Can't Draw Widow's Benefits Does That Affect My Medicare Coverage?
After my husband died, I was told that I was not eligible for his Social Security benefits because I had worked as a public school teacher in California, and so was subject to the "Government Pension Offset." I had not paid into Social Security myself; I receive a STRS (State Teachers' Retirement System) pension. He had received both his PERS (Public Employees' Retirement System) pension and Social Security. Does this denial affect my Medicare coverage?
Hi,
First off, I'm sorry for your loss.
I'm glad you asked this question. The answer is no . . . Read More

Will Social Security Automatically Increase My Wife's Payments When I Start Drawing My Benefits?
My wife was born in 1952, and I was born in 1955. My wife has been collecting Social Security benefits on her own record since she turned 66 (FRA) 2 years ago. I will be turning 66 years and 2 months (FRA) soon, and just applied for my social security benefits, which are considerably higher than my wife's.
Does my wife have to file some kind of application to collect based on spousal benefit, or will Social Security automatically adjust her payment to the higher amount when I start to receive my payments? Thanks.

No, entitlement to spousal . . . Read More

Will My PLOP Payment Affect My Social Security Benefits For This Year And Next Year?
Am 65 and was recently separated from state employer with severance package. I paid into social security for 35 years. Started social security and state pension benefits effective Sept 2020. Have a PLOP (Partial lump sum payment) being paid in Dec 2020. Will this PLOP ($40K) affect my social security benefits for 2020 and 2021?
Hi,
I assume that what you're asking is whether or not your PLOP payment will count as earnings for Social Security's earnings test. If your PLOP payment is essentially severance pay, then it would probably count as earned . . . Read More

Is It Correct That My Mother Can't Claim Spousal Benefits If She Started Drawing Her Own Benefits At Age 62?
My 86 year old mother elected to collect social security at age 62. My fathers social security check is significantly larger than hers so I suggested she look into claiming 50% spousal benefit based on his check amount. She said social security told her when she elected to receive her own benefit at age 62 she eliminated the option to collect a spousal benefit. Is this correct?
Hi,
What your mother was apparently told by Social Security isn't exactly accurate, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she would be eligible for spousal benefits. A person . . . Read More

What Can I Say To Get My Medicare Part B Coverage Reinstated?
Here's my situation. When I first got Medicare Part A and Part B, I had zero guidance. Plus I was in the throws of a divorce and having to find a place to live. I never saw anything from Social Security that my Part B premiums were not being paid. My Medicare Part B lapsed and I was told that I need to fill out a SSA-795 to get it reinstated. Now I own a fine that is beyond my ability to pay to be reinstated (upwards of $600).
--> I am looking for examples of what to say in SSA-795 form's declaration to Social Security asking them to be reinstated.

Should Social Security Pay Me Back Pay?
I have received a letter from social security stating "we changed your monthly benefit to $_______ as of October 2020. We found that your prior amount was incorrect. We changed your benefit amount to give you credit for your earnings. We did not include these earnings when we figured your benefit amount before."
The amount difference is about $48 more a month. My question is should they probably be going back & giving me this amount from the beginning when I started drawing social security???? Please advise.
