How Will My Husband Be Able To Collect On My Social Security If He's From Costa Rica?

How will my husband be able to collect on my SS(if I die first!!) when he is from Costa rica
thanks in advance!!!

Hi,

Assuming that your husband would qualify to receive benefits on your record and he's living in Costa Rica, he could file a claim with Social Security's Federal Benefit Unit in Costa Rica. Address information can be found on Social Security's website: https://www.ssa.gov/foreign/foreign.htm.

Is This Standard Operating Procedure For SSA?

Category:

You indicated Social Security could provide me with information about an ex-spouse; such as whether they are deceased (to file for survivor benefits) and whether any of them (more than one) were collecting benefits on my earnings record. I called them and after numerous questions about MY past employment, etc., they said they could not verify my ID, and I needed to come in their office in person, with an ID, and a copy of my marriage license.
Is this SOP, (standard operating procedure) for SSA?

Can I Go Back And Collect Benefits From Many Years Ago?

Category:

My husband died suddenly at age 51, I was 53. I had a 15 year old for whom I received a benefit for 2-1/2 years until age 18. I did not know about widow's benefits until someone told me I could collect them at age 62 which is what I did. So I am now 69 and collected a widows benefit from age 62 until last year so at which time I switched over to mine own. Today someone said I could have collected a widows benefit from the date he passed away. I never knew this and so did not collect for the 9 years until I turned age 62. May I go back and collect the 9 years I did not collect.

Will My Social Security Decrease If I Marry?

Category:

I collect social security my boyfriend does not. He works. If we marry will my social security decrease

Hi,

No, assuming that you are receiving benefits based on your own work record. However, if you're receiving benefits based on someone else's record (e.g. parent, former spouse) then your benefits could terminate if you marry, depending on your age and the type of benefit that you are receiving.

Best, Jerry

Should I Change My Plans If I'm Concerned About The Federal Deficit?

Category:

I am 66 and my wife is 62. I retired on a pension in 2012 and my wife is still working but plans to retire on a pension in two more years. I have followed your advice and plan on not applying for social security benefits until age 70 but I am getting nervous about the viability of social security and legislative pressure to reduce or modify benefits, especially given the latest news that the federal deficit is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2020. Do you feel the file-at-70 strategy is still sound?

Should My Husband And I Start Diverting All Of The Income From Our Business Into My Name?

My husband and I are getting close to retirement. He plans on drawing next year at age 70. I just
turned 66. We own a business, and he has been taking all of the income under his name on our joint
tax return for the past several years and getting all of the social security credits. We planned on filing
for social security next year, when he will be 70 and I will be 67. Should we start diverting all of the
income from our business into my name now; so I can accumulate more income and more benefits by
