Will All Of Us Continue To Receive Our Social Security Benefits If We Move To Italy?

My husband 72, and I 66 both are drawing SS. Our disabled adult daughter is drawing on her Dad’s SS, SSDI. We are entitled dual citizenship to Italy. Contemplating on exercising this right but retaining US citizenship. Will the three of us continue to receive our SS and SSDI Checks? We would like to live in Italy for a time.

Hi,

Yes, moving to Italy would have no impact on your or your husband's or daughter's Social Security benefits. It sounds like what your daughter is actually receiving, though, is disabled adult child's (DAC), or childhood disability benefits (CDB), as opposed to SSDI. SSDI is the abbreviation used for Social Security disability insurance benefits, which are benefits based on a person's own earnings history. As a U.S. citizen, though, your daughter could continue receiving her benefits in Italy regarding of what type of Social Security benefits she receives.

Best, Jerry
