Can My Wife Claim Her Social Security At Age 62 And Switch To Spousal Benefits At Age 67?

My wife worked until around 10 years ago. She has become a homemaker since then. We are both 49 years old. I have a full time job and a small pension to pay our bills and whatnot. My question is can my wife claim her social security at 62 and then switch to spousal social security when I retire at 67?

If I Accept Spousal Benefits Will It Disqualify Me From Getting My Own Full Benefit At Age 70?

Hi Larry, my spouse just started receiving his SSI last month--about $1300. I received the form letter from SSA regarding his ap and since my birthday is July of 1953 I am eligible to receive the spousal benefit. I have a phone call with SSA on July 14th. I have read your book but I am still very confused. IF I go ahead and accept a spousal benefit of about $600, does this disqualify me from getting my full retirement benefit of about $3000 at age 70? I plan on waiting until that age to retire.

Can My Wife Collect Half Of My Age 66 Rate Even If I Haven't Filed For My Benefits?

Hi Larry -

After receiving COMPLETELY CONTRADICTORY ADVICE during various calls to SSA, I am writing you in the hope you can provide some guidance:

Background:

I was born January 1952 and my loving wife was born Sept 1951. Neither of us has claimed SS. I am no longer working; my wife still works, earning approx $35K/annum. My estimated benefit @ 70 is $3900/mo and my wife's @ 70 is $1600.

Does What I Read On Social Security's Website Mean That Since I Was Born In 1955 I Can't Put My Own Benefits On Hold And Collect Half Of My Husband's Benefit Amount?

Hello Larry,

In researching our plan to request social security benefits I ran across this statement on the social security administration's website. Does it mean that since I was born in 1955, that I cannot take advantage of filing for my benefits, putting them on hold, and then receiving 1/2 of my husband's benefits? He will be 70 in October of this year and he plans to file for his benefits then.

If My Disabled Adult Child Claims Benefits On My Wife's Record Now, Will He Be Able To Switch To My Account When I Apply?

I am 65; my wife is 63. My social security (SS) full retirement age PIA benefit is approximately $200 greater than hers. We had been planning on waiting to file for social security until a later date in order to maximize our benefits, especially delaying my filing in order to increase her survivor benefit.

Will My Wife Be Eligible For Spousal Benefits From My SSDI Instead Of Her Own Benefit At Her FRA?

I?m 54 years old and receive SSD, $2464. . My wife is 62 and wants to retire at age 63. If she starts drawing SSA at age 63, approximately $913, will she be eligible for spousal benefits for my SSDI instead of her PIA at her FRA as it will be more than her PIA? Or what is the best way to file for benefits?

How Do The Deeming Rules Apply To Us?

I am 62; My wife is 66; Both of use plan to defer taking Social Security until we are 70. I am the higher income earner. When my wife turns 70, we planned for her to take her benefit at it's maximum. Since I am waiting until I turn 70 to start my benefit, she cannot apply for spousal benefits. What happens when I turn 70 and begin taking benefits since she will be 74. Will her benefits go up to 1/2 of mine (my FRA estimate is approx. $3000 and her's is $1000; Age 70 benefit is $ 4000 and $1300 respectively). How do the deeming rules apply in this situation?
