I have been getting spousal SS benefits. I turn 70 early January. Do I need to notify Soc. Sec. or will they automatically switch me to my own benefits. Thanks

I am American, 70 in January. I am in Paris separated from my (French) husband, but not legally for now. I have to apply for my SS retirement (it's barely 3 months in advance) but I will be relocating to the United States. I'm letting my carte de sejour to stay expire. I already have my U.S. address and will be living there. I would have left by now but making arrangements for my things etc. with current coronavirus restrictions is proving difficult - I can't go back/forth as I thought I could and need to apply now but am told not to go through the U.S.

My wife is 66 and 9 mos. She is filing for her retirement based on her age of 66 and 3 mos in order to get 6 months' retroactive payment. I am filing a restricted application for a spousal benefit at the same time. We sent protective filing statements to our local field office via certified mail on 10/31/20 so that we could file later than Oct. Is it possible to file for 6 months' retroactive payment going back to 4/20, and receive payment in 2021?

Hi David,

You'll need to file an application for Social Security retirement benefits, and you'll want to choose March 2021 as the month to start your own benefits. That's the payment that comes in April, by the way.

i have been separated for 33 years (not legally). i understand that i can still collect a portion of my husbands social security. He is military retired and his social security payment is more than mine. i still work part time. what do i do? Do I go into a social security office?

I applied on line for my normal retirement benefits three months prior (July) to my full retirement month (October). Benefits would commence in November. However, when I check my Social Security account on line, it still shows my claim as processing in the initial stage - after almost four months from the application date. Shortly after applying I received a call from Social Security and was asked a few questions and was told everything was fine on my claim. I’ve since called Social Security back twice and was assured everything was ok.

Due to COVID I can only apply for social security disability using on-line form. It does not appear that the on-line form allows adding additional page to the remarks section. I have seen a lot of doctors about 12 regarding my illnesses and would quickly run out out of allotted space on this on-line form. Would Social Security contact me after I submit the application to obtain the additional doctor's names?

Is payment benefit calculated on when you apply or when you receive your first payment? My birthdate is 6/9/1954. I'd like to receive my first payment in January 2021 at the increased rate for waiting 6 months past FRA. When should I apply? Thank you so much!

I will turn 70 in mid-January, 2021. I am single, never married, no children, no dependents. I am still working, though I will probably leave my job somewhere in 2021, but have not yet decided.

I have read your book, and have now just finished by second re-read, or run through it, focusing on those points I think most relevant to me.
