What Do I Need To Do To Switch From Spousal Benefits To My Own Benefits At Age 70?

Hi Larry,
I have a question:
I'm currently collecting spousal benefits, and I'd like to switch to my own social security record when I reach 70 years-old on 03/20/2021. Can you please let me know what I have to do?
Thank you very much for your help.
David

Hi David,

You'll need to file an application for Social Security retirement benefits, and you'll want to choose March 2021 as the month to start your own benefits. That's the payment that comes in April, by the way.

You can try applying online at Social Security's website (https://secure.ssa.gov/iClaim/rib), or you can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 to initiate the application process. Your application can be submitted as early as November 2020, or as late as September 2021.

Best, Jerry
