Why Didn't I Receive My Social Security Today?

Wy I didn't receive my social security today

Hi,

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't have any way of knowing that. It wouldn't have anything to do with the partial government shutdown, though, because Social Security benefits will continue to be paid during the shutdown. You'll probably want to try calling Social Security to see if they can explain why you didn't receive your benefit payment.

Best, Jerry

Would This Widow Get Both Railroad And Social Security?

husband worked railroad for 16 years Got annuity check after the WWII and got payments till he died. He also paid social security for 40 years. Does his widow get railroad and social security?

Hi,

The widow in your question couldn't get survivor benefits from both Social Security and Railroad Retirement. If a person who dies had credits under both the Social Security program and Railroad Retirement, the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) determines which agency has jurisdiction for the payment of any survivor benefits. The deceased worker's earnings . . . Read More

Can I Receive My Husband's Social Security Even If I'm Working?

My husband past away at age 60 which was three years ago. He was receiving a Disability check for the prior couple years of his passing away. I am 63 and still working. Can I receive his SS or partial SS or does my wages play a part in that?

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

You could potentially receive widow's benefits depending on your benefit rate and the amount that you're earning. If you file for benefits before you reach full retirement age (FRA), the Social Security earnings test could result in full or partial withholding of your benefits . . . Read More

When Can I File A Restricted Application For Spousal Benefits?

Dear Mr. Kotlikoff,
I thank you and Jerry so much for answering my question a few days ago. I just got your latest book from Amazon to study.
I have a follow up to my question.
Again, the situation I had described, but now in reverse,

I will be turning 66 in November of 2019. That means, I turned 62 before January 2, 2016. My FRA Benefit will be $2,300/month. My wife will reach her FRA in July 2020 (born after Jan. 1, 1954) with FRA benefit $2,600/month.

1. If I file for my FRA Benefit this November, can I restrict my application to apply only . . . Read More

Will My Social Security Be Reduced If I Receive A Survivor Pension Based On My Husband's Government Work?

I will be eligible for Social Security full benefits at 67. My husband will have a municipal government pension that will have a survivor option. If he predeceases me, and I collect the survivor government pension benefit, will my social security be reduced? Thank you.

Hi,

No. Receipt of a survivor pension based on your husband's government work would not affect your Social Security benefits, regardless of whether you're receiving your own Social Security retirement benefits or widow's benefits.

Best, Jerry

Would My Fiance Lose Any Of His Benefits If We Get Married?

Ok I asked about my remarry an if I would lose any of my benefits at my age of 67. I forgot to ask if my fiance would lose any of his benefits at his ass ge of 68. I know I have a higher amount of Social Security than he does with my widow's benefits. So does he lose his benefits or even part of it ? Thank You

Hi,

No. Since you and your fiancé are both over age 60, your getting married would have no adverse affect on any type of Social Security benefits that either of you currently receives, assuming that neither of you receive disabled adult child's . . . Read More

Is My Plan The Best Way To Maximize My Benefits?

Larry,
In May 2019 I will turn 66 years old and do not plan to retire until May 2023, age 70. My retirement will consist of Social Security (I currently work at a private college and have taxed social security earnings) and a small teacher retirement (13 years as an elementary school teacher). The teacher retirement will be subject to a WEP reduction.

My goal is to receive the 50% spousal benefit and avoid the GPO from ages 66 - 70, and then only have the WEP reduction to my own Social Security benefit to begin at age 70 (WEP - my teacher retirement).

I want . . . Read More

How Would A Remarriage Affect My Widow's Benefits?

I'm 67, will be 68 soon, my question is, I'm wanting to remarry ,but will it affect my widow's benefits that I am getting at this time ? And if it does affect it how much would I Lose ?

Hi,

Good news. A remarriage occurring at age 60 or later has no effect on a person's eligibility for Social Security widow's benefits (or surviving divorced spouse's benefits) on a previous spouse's record. Nor would a remarriage adversely affect your benefit rate. Therefore, if you get married it will have no effect on the Social Security widow's benefits that you . . . Read More
