Spousal Benefits

Can My Wife File For Spousal Benefits When I Start Drawing My Benefits?

Category:

I am 65 and working. My wife is 70 and started taking social security at 62. I will work until I am 70 unless my employer lets me go. When I file for my social security, can my wife apply for a spousal benefit. If so, will that be based on what my social security would be at 66 or at 70?

Thank you in advance,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Your wife could potentially receive additional benefits as a spouse when you file, but only if 50% of your full retirement age rate (PIA) is more than her own PIA.

Can My Husband Get Half Of My Age 70 Benefit If It's Higher Than His Own Rate?

Category:

I am 57, working full time, earning maximum benefits for social security. My husband is 62 and has not been working for several years. His estimated benefit if he takes early social security is about 1400 dollars per month. If we take that money now, then we can afford to wait until I am 70 (13 years from now) for me to get my maximum amount. Can he then get half of my social security if it is more than 1400 dollars?

Hi,

Can My Wife Get Spousal Benefits When I File?

Category:

i will be 66 in september 2017 and my will be 60 can i get spousal benefit for her if I apply for my full retirement

Hi,

Unless your wife has an eligible child in her care, she can't get spousal benefits until she is at least age 62. And, she will only be eligible for spousal benefits if 50% of your full retirement age rate is higher than her own full retirement age rate.

You and your wife should strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to determine your best overall filing strategy.

Suspended Spousal Benefits - The Rest Of The Story

I would like to express my sincere thanks to you & Jerry for the excellent advice you provided to a question regarding my right to file for spousal benefits ("Was Social Security Correct To Suspend My Wife's Benefits? - February 18, 2017). My husband filed and suspended just prior to the April 2016 deadline; I filed for spousal benefits in August 2016. Social Security approved, then immediately suspended, my spousal benefits. No one at Social Security could tell me why.

Are Their Spousal Benefits I Can Apply For At Age 60?

Category:

I will be 60 in January, 2018. My husband turns 72 next week, July 2017. He has been getting SS since he turned 62, so that we could get child ( under 18 ) benefits for our daughter who went through leukemia. Are there spousal benefits I can apply for at 60 and put off taking my SS until I turn 70? Daughter turned 18 2 years ago and we no longer receive those benefits.
Thank you,
Brooke
