Spousal Benefits

Is It Correct That The Reduction For Spousal Benefits Is Based On When The Spouse Becomes Eligible For Those Benefits?

In response to a question asked by Sandra you said "Eight years later, Molly's husband files for his benefits with a PIA of $2,400. Molly's spousal benefit would then be $200, or 50% of her husband's PIA minus Molly's own PIA (i.e. $2,400 / 2 – $1,000), which would be unreduced since Molly has already reached FRA when she becomes eligible for spousal benefits."

Will My Husband Qualify For Benefits As My Spouse?

Hi Larry, I am a retired American waiting until age 70 to file for my social security benefits. I am married (for over 10 years now) to a Canadian citizen who has a green card. I wonder if my husband would be eligible for spousal benefis on my record, when I file at age 70. He is two years younger. For the past couple of years we have spent most of our time in Canada, because I would like to become a dual citizen. However, we have a US address, US bank accounts, and file both US and Canadian taxes each year.

Would You Help Us Understand How To Figure Out My Wife's Options?

Hi Larry, Enjoy your answers!
I'm receiving social security @ $2,130 per month. My wife is currently 62 and would retire soon if we can determine how much in spousal benefits she would receive at 62, 63, 63, 65 and FRA at 66 based on mine. We do not understand the formula other than ay her FRA she should get 50% of mine. Would you help us understand how to figure this out please?

Does My Wife Need To Wait Until Full Retirement Age To Receive A 50% Spousal Benefit?

Does my wife need to wait until her full retirement age to receive her 50% spousal benefit?

Hi,

Yes, unless she has a child in her care who is eligible for child's benefits and who is either under age 16 or is disabled. Otherwise, your wife's spousal rate would be reduced for age if she starts drawing prior to full retirement age (FRA).

Will My Wife Qualify For Half Of My Benefit Rate When I Start Drawing?

My wife has no social security credits to her records. I am beyound FRA and have not strated collecting my benifit. When I do start will she qualify to draw half the amount I am entitled to?

Hi,

The maximum amount that your wife could potentially draw as a spouse while you're living would be equal to 50% of your primary insurance amount (PIA). A person's PIA is equal to the amount of their Social Security retirement benefit if they start drawing at full retirement age (FRA).

When Will My Husband Be Eligible To Draw Off Of My Social Security?

My full retirement age is August, 2021, however I am being disabled by medical doctor due long standing lower back problems. It was our intent for my husband, who is already retired, to draw off of my earnings when I retired. Should I just take early retirement now, which will cost us ~$500/month or go ahead with disability and then have him draw off my social security when it would be eligible for him to draw off? When will he be eligible to draw off my social security if I elect disability? Thank you so much for your help.

Can I Still Further Appeal To Get Spousal Benefits?

Hi Larry, I am a non-US citizen nor have a green card. But my wife of 45 years is a U.S. citizen. We both live together in the US and my wife is 68 years old already and receives her social security pension. My wife never petitioned me and will NOT petition me as I made a serious mistakes to her in the past. She said she can forgive but cannot forget. Our children who are all US citizens would not petition me neither in obedience to their mother.
