What Can I Do If I Think That Social Security Made A Mistake In Calculating My Benefit Amount?
I started my Canada Pension at age 60 @ approx $142 per month. At age 62 I started my Social Security for approx $600 after WEP. However the WEP the agent assessed was dollar for dollar $142 with no exchange rate factored. If I understand correctly, my WEP assessment should have been half my CPP with exchange rate applied? If true, what can I do?
Hi. If it's been less than 60 days since you received your award letter from Social Security, you can request an appeal (https://www.ssa.gov/apply/ . . . Read More

Will The Late Enrollment Penalty For My Wife End When Her Disability Benefits Convert To Retirement Benefits At FRA?
My wife began receiving SSA Disability benefits in December 2013 at age 55 and is a dependent on my health insurance. I retired in June 2010 and failed to realize that my health insurance provider required my wife to enroll in Medicare Part B. She enrolled in Medicare Part B in 2015 and is charged a 10% late enrollment penalty. I understand that the Disability benefits automatically convert to Retirement benefits at her full retirement age. Does this mean the the late enrollment penalty will end? Can she terminate her Disability benefits just before FRA in order to qualify for . . . Read More

Can Someone Claim Divorced Widower Benefits And Remarry While Allowing Their Own Benefit Amount To Grow?
Hi - thank you for the answers. If I am correct, divorced spouses are not supposed to re-marry to claim ex's benefit.
How does it work in a situation where a surviving divorced widow (husband or wife), the ex passed away. Could he claim the divorced widower benefit on ex's record, and re-marry either before filing a claim or after, while allowing own benefit to grow? Thank you
Hi. Yes. As long as a person gets married after reaching age 60, that marriage would not prevent them from qualifying for survivor benefits on the record of a deceased ex- . . . Read More

How Should I Proceed?
I have recently discovered that I have been paying my premiums for United Health Care and Humana both through deductions from my Social Security Check and my bank account. Neither UHC nor Humana have any record of my payment through Social Security, however I do have documentation that both have been deducted for the past 5 years. Can you please advise how to proceed?
Thank you,
Hi. I'm not sure that I understand your situation exactly. I assume you signed up for Part D of Medicare with the 2 companies you mention. Part D coverage is handled through . . . Read More

Which Month Should I Elect To Start My Benefits?
I turned 70 in June 2022. I completed most of the online SS benefits application on 6/30/22, but did not send it immediately, fearing that SSA might automatically pay me 6 months of benefits (retroactive from June), thereby costing me 6 months of delayed retirement credits. How should I answer the question: "Do you want benefits to start in 06/2022? Yes/No(Your other available options are 12/2021 to 11/2022.)". I am inclined to choose 11/2022 so as to eliminate the possibility that an automatic payment of 6 months of retroactive benefits would cost me delayed retirement credits . . . Read More

How Do I Get Back All Of My Premiums From 2016 To Now?
How do I get back all of my premiums from 2016 to current
Hi. I assume that you're referring to Medicare premiums, and you can't get a refund of those premiums unless something unusual was involved. For example, on occasion people pay duplicate Medicare premiums when they pay premiums out of pocket and Social Security withholds premiums from their Social Security benefits for the same month(s). In those cases, people can get a refund of the excess premiums they paid. But, you can't simply decide to opt out of Medicare retroactively and get a refund of . . . Read More

Would My Canadian Pension Be Subject To WEP And GPO?
I am a Canadian citizen and US permanent resident who has worked in the US for over 30 years in Education - which did not have FICA deductions. I am now drawing pension benefits from CalSTRS. I do have a few quarters credit in Social Security due to some part-time side jobs, but no where near enough to qualify for any Social Security benefits. However, I am eligible for for a small CPP benefit of approximately C$170 monthly due to my work history in Canada prior to moving to the US. If I apply to receive the CPP benefit, will it still be subject to WEP and GPO?

Where Can I Find The Earnings Amount That Will Qualify As Substantial Earnings In 2023?
Like most other people, I'm trying to determine the right time to claim my Social Security benefit. At the end of 2022, I will have 29 years of substantial earnings for WEP calculation purposes. Based on my current income, I think I will have earned enough to qualify for the 30th year at the end of May 2023. My questions... Where can I find the amount that will qualify for substantial earnings for 2023? (the chart on the SS sight only goes up though 2022). And if I apply for benefits in June 2023 (assuming the my earning will have passed the threshold), will the partial . . . Read More
