How Much Will I Owe In General?

My father passed away in March and they stopped giving the money he gets from social security in April. Whatever he had left in his account was transferred into mine his account was under my name. Since he was unable to go to the bank due to his condition. I’m asking they deduct a reclamation of the same amount he got monthly. I wanna if that’s gonna be a monthly payment or that’s how much I will owe in general

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm not sure I understand your situation. If your father died in March, then the only way you'd need to return . . . Read More

Can I Get My Payments Earlier In The Month?

Hello Larry, I thought I might run this by you. My (disability check) arrives on the fourth Wednesday of every month. This is a concern, my bills are due the first week of the month. I am going through a divorce and will be my sole provider. Asking for your assistance.

Thanking you in advance, Linda

Hi Linda,

Unfortunately, you're probably stuck with a payment date on the 4th Wednesday of each month. The date of payment of your benefits is determined by your birthday, and apparently your birthday falls between the 21st & 31st day of a . . . Read More

Did I Get It Wrong?

Mr. Kotlikoff,

We discussed my issues a few months back, and after thinking i had your strategy down, I did file in April. Yesterday an agent out of Baltimore called to finalize the numbers. Then he put doubt in my mind, so I put everything on hold. I couldn't explain to him the strategy you suggested. My particulars: 66 in Feb 2021. A wife, age 50, and 4 dependents under 18. Currently make $70,000 a year. I was hoping to start my and the kids benefits. Close estimates: full retirement age; $2818 a month filed in April: $2630 Total family benefits cannot be more than $ . . . Read More

Is There A Strategy That Would Maximize Spousal Benefits In Our Case?

WEP and spousal benefits: I worked both corporate and education (thus WEP). For corporate only have 17 years. I am 61 and expect to claim SS at 62. Before WEP my early amount is ~$1,083, am assuming with WEP it would be~$593. My husband will file this year at age 66 (his full retirement) and receive ~$2980. I understand that my WEP affects what I can receive for spousal benefits. Is there a strategy as to order of filing, or even delay of one of us, that would maximize a spousal benefit? Thank you.

WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision) does not . . . Read More

Will There Be A Gap In My Medicare Coverage Because I Switched To Drawing Benefits On My Own Record?

Hi,
I am a widow and I took survivor's benefits and Medicare at 66, my full retirement age. I will be 70 this month (June) and I applied for my own retirement benefits, which are substantially more. I received a letter from Social Security confirming the change, but it says that I will get a new Medicare card and the Medicare coverage will begin in August. Will I have a two month gap in medical coverage?

Thank you.

Hi,

It's normal to have your Medicare number change when you switch from drawing survivor benefits to drawing your own . . . Read More

What Should I Do Now?

Hi,
I will be 68 at the end of this month. I have been receiving survivors benefits since I was 60. I keep getting the run around from social security regarding my potential allotment when I turn 70 if I file under my own work record. I would like to find out if it is even worth waiting but they take my info and apparently any reply gets lost before being sent to me. What should I do now? I am getting frustrated.
Thanks in advance.

Can You Help?

I need help. I have major arthritis and siratik nerv pain. I can't seem to work like I was doing. Can you help?

Hi,

The only way that I'm able to help people is by answering questions about Social Security benefits. If you're disabled and under full retirement age (FRA), and if you're earning less than $1,260 per month then you may want to consider applying for Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Am I Eligible For Unemployment Insurance?

Hi, I am on SSDI, I work part time. Since the covid 19 outbreak I have had my hours cut drastically. Sometimes I have 8 days off then one day on, then 8 more days off. Am I eligible for unemployment insurance? Thank you

Hi,

I'm sorry, but my expertise is limited to Social Security benefits so I'm not able to answer questions about unemployment insurance. However, I can tell you that if you do qualify for unemployment insurance, it would have no adverse effect on your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits.

Best, Jerry

Thank you.

Thank you. I just filed for my own SS to start at age 70. Since I was born in 1950, when I reached 66 I was able file for my spouse benefit only. I did this using your advice at each stage and everything went smoothly. I will get about $10,000 more each year from age 70 on. Although my husband and I came late to your guidance--he had already taken his SS at age 62--we have benefitted greatly from your advice. We could have done better if he had waited until at least his FRA. On the other hand, we traveled and had some wonderful experiences before his health deteriorated, so it . . . Read More
