Spousal Benefits

Would There Any Penalty If A Person In Their 70s Claims Spousal Benefits Retroactively?

For two spouses older than 70, is there any penalty for a retroactive spousal claim for the wife when the husband has been collecting for more than a year? I read that the spousal benefit can be reduced under certain circumstances for a retroactive claim, but don't know if that's applicable in this case.

Can My Spouse Now Claim The Difference Between Her Benefits And Half Of My Benefits?

My spouse and I were both born in 1948. She started her social security benefits at age 62 after she retired. I am Over seventy and started taking my full benefits at 70, although I am still working part time. I took your advice and filed for 1/2 of her benefit amount when I turned 66, which was my full retirement age and did not switch to my own benefits until age 70. My question is this:

Can my spouse now now claim the difference between her benefits and 1/2 of my benefits which is several hundred dollars a month?

Will Social Security Automatically Increase My Wife's Payments When I Start Drawing My Benefits?

My wife was born in 1952, and I was born in 1955. My wife has been collecting Social Security benefits on her own record since she turned 66 (FRA) 2 years ago. I will be turning 66 years and 2 months (FRA) soon, and just applied for my social security benefits, which are considerably higher than my wife's.

Does my wife have to file some kind of application to collect based on spousal benefit, or will Social Security automatically adjust her payment to the higher amount when I start to receive my payments? Thanks.

Is It Correct That My Mother Can't Claim Spousal Benefits If She Started Drawing Her Own Benefits At Age 62?

My 86 year old mother elected to collect social security at age 62. My fathers social security check is significantly larger than hers so I suggested she look into claiming 50% spousal benefit based on his check amount. She said social security told her when she elected to receive her own benefit at age 62 she eliminated the option to collect a spousal benefit. Is this correct?

Can My Wife Claim My Social Security?

I will turn 66 Jan 13 2020. My wife is disabled and collecting her social security. I am working. I thought I might take my social security March 1 if I understand correctly to get my full amount. I am trying to pay my house down to do a reverse mortgage. My wife gets $1346, I will get $2010. Reading some of your stories I was wondering can my wife claim my social security and how does it work? I wouldn't claim until later then to get a higher amount, I plan to work until I am 68 to 70.

Is It Correct That My Friend Can Get A Full Half Of Her Husband's Benefit Rate At Age 62 If Her Husband Is Drawing Social Security Disability Benefits?

Hi Larry, I was informed by a friend that her spouse the higher Earner is filing for social security disability at 63, and that she will be filing for her full spousal benefits at 62. She was told by her adviser that she would get the full half of her spouse PIA? I told her that she would be penalized for filling before her FRA, and she stated that because her spouse is getting a disability benefit that she would be entitled to half his PIA if she filled at 62. Please advise if this is correct so I can clarify this before she files. Thank you for your time.

Can My Wife Draw On My Benefits If She Files At Age 62?

I am married and 3 years younger (54) than my spouse (57) and also the higher income earner. My question is simple but complicated. She wants to retire and start collecting SS as soon as possible (62). What is the best and optimal way to file. Can she drawn upon my benefits since I'm the higher earner even though I am also the younger of the two. I've seen it the other way but not this way. Thanks for any advise.

Will I Be Eligible To Collect On My New Husband's Social Security After We're Married For A Year?

I am 63 years old currently collecting Social Security from my ex-husband. I plan on getting married soon. My future husband has not started collecting Social Security as of yet, he wants to wait until he’s 69. He is 67 years old. Will I be eligible to collect on his Social Security after were married for one year?

Hi,

No. There's no way that you could collect benefits from your new husband's Social Security account at least until he starts drawing his benefits.
