Is It True That The Work My Son Did When He Was 30 Will Prevent Him From Qualifying For Disabled Adult Child Benefits?

Hi, my son is 36 and has cerebral palsy since birth. It severely affects his ability to use both arms and hands and has overall general fatigue/weakness. He also has neck and back pain documented and treated since age 10 or so. We have never applied for SS for him because he wanted to work. He had one job when he was 20-21 earning well below the SGA. When he was 30, a family friend got him a hired at an automotive plant, he tried very hard and had to have reduced hours and responsibilities but was able to work for about a year before getting hurt and eventually had to leave. Why Did Social Security Change My Payment Date?

I am nearly 80 years old. I have been receiving Social Security Retirement Payments for many years. My birthday falles between the 1st and the 10th so I have been receiving the payments on the 2nd Wednesday of each month (more or less). I rely on the payment to pay for normal living expenses and, most importantly, our mortgage.
Today I received a letter from the SSA that says in effect:
- You will NOT receive a retirement check in March.
- You will receive your "March" check on April 3rd.
- You will receive your "April" check on May 3rd.
etc. etc. . . . Read More

Would Any Bonuses I Receive Count As Earnings For Trial Work Period Purposes?

In a question I asked you recently, you replied that the Trial Work Level (TWL) for SSDI is calculated based on when the work is performed, not when paid. Thank you for your answer. I now have a few follow-up questions:

Although I plan to limit my monthly hours (I work part-time) to stay below the TWL. However, my new employer sometimes pays small bonuses (say, $50) if we get excellent reviews from customers. I have no way to predict if or when I might get one of these bonuses. Would these rewards count as part of my $880 monthly TWL limit?

Also, the company . . . Read More

Will My Husband Be Penalized For Waiting Until Age 69 To File For Part B Of Medicare?

I will retire Jul 1 2019.from a NYC agency. I become 65 5/22/19. My spouse has been retired and covered under my medical. We both will sign up for Medicare Part B. Will he be penalized for waiting until now that he is 69? His DOB 9/13/49. He collects SSA check since 2011 when he retired at 62. Do we apply online or in SSA office? When do I apply, since I retire 7/1/19?

Hi,

Your husband won't be penalized with higher than normal Part B Medicare premiums as long as he's been covered under your employer group health plan (EGHP), and if that plan would . . . Read More

Can You Explain The Difference Between SSDI and Disabled Adult Child Benefits?

Can you explain the difference, if any between SSDI and Disabled Adult Child Benefits? For example, is the qualifying different? The calculation of benefits different? My thanks.

Hi,

There are numerous differences, but here are a few of the main ones.

Social Security disability benefits (SSDI) are payable based on the disabled individual's own earnings history. SSDI benefits can only be paid prior to a person's full retirement age (FRA), so in order to qualify for SSDI a person's disability must begin prior to their FRA. The SSDI benefit rate . . . Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Whether or not you'd have to pay income taxes on any of the Social Security benefits you receive depends on your total annual income. For more information, refer to the following Social Security website: . . . Read More

Is It True That The Deadline For Filing A Restricted Application Is 2019?

I was born before 1954 and, based on information I read in your excellent book, I know I am eligible to file for a restricted application on my younger wife's benefit (born in 1954) once she actually begins taking her benefit and let mine earn additional credits until age 70. We are planning on doing this in the early part of 2020. But, recently, I have read some articles on-line and in print that are stating that the ability to apply for a restricted benefit will end at the end of 2019. Is there any truth to this deadline?

Hi,

No, there's no specific . . . Read More

Can I Now Retroactively File A Restricted Claim For Spousal Benefits And Get A Lump Sum Payment?

Larry, my wife is slightly older than me. She filed for SS benefits upon reaching her FRA. I chose to wait until I reach 70. Now I realize that I could have made a restricted filing for spousal benefits back when I reached FRA and such would have still allowed my own benefits to increase until I was 70. Can I now retroactively make a restricted filing for spousal benefits and get a lump some payment?

Hi,

The maximum retroactivity allowed for that type of claim is 6 months, so if you reached your full retirement age (FRA) more than 6 months ago you . . . Read More
