Should My Husband File Now If He's Worried About Future Changes To The Social Security Laws?

My husband is 62 and has minimal income. I am approaching 50 and have a well paying job. We have been discussing whether to wait until he turns 66 to start collecting social security benefits so that he gets the full amount. However, with all the recent political talks regarding cutting SS benefits, should he collect now? Since he's already 62, do you think any changes passed by congress will affect his current or future benefits? Should he collect now in case they change the early retirement age? Thanks for your help.

Does Becoming A US Citizen Affect My Benefit Rate Or Exempt Me From WEP?

Good day,
Thanks for the web site, I was born in Canada and just recently became a US Citizen, will that affect my Social security amount, will that eliminate the WEP. Since I am a now a US citizen I feel that I should get my full benefits and not only the percent calculation I am receiving now. Thanks for your time.

What Can I Do?

I have retired (65) I was under extreme duress, and it was necessary to do so. I applied for my Retirement and for my SS. I went to SS office sat for 2 hrs and when I got to see a very nice young man. He pointed out that in 1968 when my mother took me to get my Card for the first time she had to submit my birth certificate. (for a work permit for school) there is an incorrect date for my year of birth. (1951) mine is 7-11-52. so they did nothing to help. The gentleman told me that sometimes when they transfer to computer.

How Do I Get The Back Payments Due Me?

My husband passed away April 9, 2014 on April 10th I called the Boise, ID social security office to ask about receiving widow's benefits. At the time I was 63 years old they said I wasn't eligible for widow's benefits. In August 2016, I was in a social security office, in Minneapolis, MN to inquire about my own social security benefits and thought I would ask about the widow's benefits again, they gave me information about my own upcoming benefits but again when I inquired about widow's benefits they told me I wasn't eligible.

Is There A Limit On The Income I Can Earn If I Work Past Age 67?

Hi Larry,

I am planning on working full time (>40 hours/week) until I reach age 67 (October 2018). I am currently collecting a spousal benefit and my wife is 62 and is collecting her retirement benefit. If I apply for my full retirement benefits at age 67, and my wife files for her spousal benefit at the same time, is there a limit on the amount of income I can earn if I continue to work full time past age 67?

Thank you.

Regards,
George

Do You Know Of Anyone Who Can Help Us?

Hi, I want to get someone to help me make sure I get the spousal benefit when I turn 66. You've explained it well, but I'm not good at these things and don't want to blow it. This doesn't happen for a few months, but I wondered if you know of anyone who can help us navigate this so we don't make a mistake and miss out on this valuable benefit. Thank you!

Any Advice For Me?

I'm still working (age 68), am divorced for over 20 years and married for over 10 years (ex-spouse is age 66). I filed online in June 2017 to receive SS benefits through my ex-spouse and requested retroactive benefits. (My plan is to continue to receive his benefit until I reach 70 at which time I will begin taking my benefit.) I began receiving his benefit in August 2017 but didn't receive any notice regarding my request for retroactive benefits.

What Procedure Would Social Security Use To Verify Your Marital Status?

Thank you for your prompt answer.I have another-If you were to apply for survivor benifits, what procedure would ssa use to verify your marital status,i e to see if you had been remarried or remarried and divorced to anyone else after your spouse you were applying on had died?

Hi,

First off, a subsequent remarriage and divorce would not disqualify a person from potentially qualifying for benefits as a widow(er) or surviving divorced spouse on the record of a prior deceased spouse.
