Widow's Benefits

Can I Switch From Drawing On My First Husband's Record To My Second Husband's Record?

Category:

I am going to be 70 yrs. old in mid-Dec. of 2017 & have been collecting divorced widow’s benefits on my 1st husband since Jan. of 2008. (I filed in Nov. 2007 & turned 60 in Dec.) After this divorce, I married a 2nd husband who died at 44 yrs. old in 1988 while we were married. Soc. Sec. stated I could collect benefits from either one but collecting from my 1st husband would provide a small VA benefit also. The way it was verbally stated & written led me to believe this was included in the widow’s benefit check.

Why Aren't I Getting A Full Widow's Benefit?

Category:

My husband retired at age 66 was going to continue to work. He died after 2 checks. I am also on SS at 62 which is just a very small amount. I am now getting survivor benefits but is much less than his full SS. The SS office is telling me because I am now 63 I collect his benefits based on my age. I find this unfair to be penalized and can't understand why I am not getting the full amount.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Can I Draw Widow's Benefits And Disability Benefits?

Category:

I lost my husband in April of 2015. I now collect his social security disability. I am able to sign up for his Social Security come April 20th of this year. 2018, I will be 60. My question is, will the Social Security disability stop? Or will I continue to receive both? Also was wondering about Widowers. Is there anything I should do in regards to that? Not sure what that all entails, if I should be getting that now, or if its even possible. Thanks so much.....

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

When Can I Draw My Husband's Social Security Without Negatively Impacting My Own Benefits?

Category:

I am 62 and my husband passed away 3 years ago. I’m employed full time with a salary of about $49,000. When can I draw my husbands social security without negatively impacting my own. I plan on working until age 70.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Your own retirement benefit rate won't be affected by collecting widow's benefits, regardless of how soon you start drawing the widow's benefits.

Can I Still Be Eligible For Widow's Benefits If I Subsequently Remarried And Divorced?

Category:

My husband of 14 years passed away. I remarried at age 5,7 but the remarriage ended in divorce. Am I still eligible to receive widows benefit from my deceased husband?

Hi,

Yes, if you are now unmarried you could potentially draw widow's benefits on your deceased husband's record. However, you must also meet the other requirements for entitlement, which can be found in Social Security's handbook: https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html.

How Can This Be?

I am 60, I applied for widows benefits was denied because I am still working and they said I made to much money. Yet a co worker of mine is age 64, and she applied for Widows benefits and get was told the same but they accepted her application and she got small checks every now and then. Now she is 62, her husband would have been 66 and she is now receiving his full benefits + she is working full time - how can that be?
