Widow's Benefits

Will My Retirement Check Disqualify Me From Drawing My Husband's SS?

Hi Larry,
My husband passed away 6 years ago. He was a retired Army veteran. After retirement he worked for a security company for a number of years. I am 54 yrs old and will retire at age 56, 2 months and 28 days from the government. Will I be eligible to collect my husband's SS at 60 or will my retirement check disqualify me? I had planned on drawing his retirement at 60 and waiting until 70 to draw my own.
Thanks!

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

If I Die Can My Wife Collect My Social Security Benefits Once She Turns 62?

Aloha
If I die before my wife can she collect my social security benefits, once she turns 62,
Even if she is:
Not a us citizen
Decides to move back to Japan
and surrenders her green card.

Hi,

Actually, your wife could potentially qualify for widow's benefits as early as age 60 in the event of your death. And, since the U.S. has a Social Security totalization agreement with Japan, moving to Japan would not cause your wife to lose her widow's benefits assuming that she's a Japanese citizen.

Best, Jerry

How Much May I Collect In The Event Of My Husband's Death?

Hello. I have a question about my social security benefit. My husband is currently 89 years old and began to collect a retired worker social security benefit at the age of 62. His date of birth is 6/1/30 and is currently receiving $18,174 a year in social security income. I was a traditional stay at home Mother. I am currently 85 and began to collect a social security spousal benefit at the age of 62. My date of birth is 4/26/1934. I am currently receiving $8,850 a year in social security.

Can I Collect Any Survivor Benefits In Addition To My Own Benefits?

I have been on disability for 5 years. My husband passed away several years years ago. I will be 66. Can I collect on any survivor benefits

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

If a person applies for more than one type of Social Security benefit (e.g. disability & widows), they can only be paid the higher of the two benefit rates. Therefore, you could only qualify for widow's benefits in addition to your own Social Security benefits if your widow's rate would be higher than the benefit rate you're being paid on your own record.

If My Wife Applies For Survivor Benefits Before Reaching FRA Will The Benefit Be Reduced For Age?

SURVIVOR BENEFIT REDUCTION. I am 71 and my wife is 58. I delayed drawing my SS until 70 to increase my benefit to the maximum. Should I die before my wife reaches FRA, and she applies for Survivor benefit, will the benefit be reduced depending on her age? Alternatively, should I survive until my wife reaches 62, files and receives a reduced benefit, does that also lock her in to a reduced survivor benefit when I die?
