Spousal Benefits

Can I Claim Half Of My Husband's Benefit?

I am receiving SSI from work in the US and I also have CPP payments from Canada I receive for working in that country. Both are from completely separate employments. I took early retirement at 62 ys of age for both. My husband started his own SSI payments this year. His SSI benefits are much higher than mine. Can I claim half his SSI payments from Social Security in the US while separated but still married and can Social Security penalize me for my CPP retirement benefits.

Which PIA Will Be Used When My Wife Files For Spousal Benefits?

Hi Larry. I started drawing my Social Security benefits at FRA (66) 4 years ago. My wife is contemplating to start her spousal benefits in 2022.
When Social Security calculates my PIA, in order to determine my wife's spousal benefits, would they adjust my FRA benefit as it was in 2017 by adding 4 years worth of COLA adjustments?
Or will the calculation be based on my original FRA benefit as it was in 2017?
Appreciate your explanation,
Sincerely,
IZ

Will My Wife's Spousal Rate Be Calculated Based On My PIA At My FRA?

I plan to begin collecting social security payments next year at age 70. At that time, my wife plans to begin collecting spousal benefits based on my earnings. My PIA at FRA was approximately $2,166. Will my wife's spousal benefit be based on that amount, or will the COLAs between my FRA and age 70 be used in calculating her benefit?

Thanks!!

Will I Have To Pay Back The Spousal Benefits Social Security Gave Me With My Benefit?

Hello,
Thanks to your help, I am in the process of petitioning Social Security to permit me to file for widows benefits at my FRA. I was born 8/57. My husband passed away 10/31/21 and he waited until he was 70 to file. I filed at 62 and I received my amount plus a small spousal benefit that they gave me automatically. Will I have to pay back the spousal benefit they gave me with my benefit if I wait until my FRA to file for my widows benefit? Thank you for all your help, Lisa

Are Spousal Benefits Calculated Using Their Spouse's Current PIA Or Their Original PIA?

Is spousal benefits figured on spouses current PIA today or on the amount of first payment received 5 years ago?

Hi. The initial spousal benefit rate is calculated based on the worker's primary insurance amount (PIA) at the time the spousal benefits are claimed. From then on, both the worker's PIA and the spouse's benefit amount are adjusted for cost of living (COLA) increases. So, in effect, the current spousal benefit rate is always based on the worker's current PIA.

Best, Jerry

Why Was My Wife's Claim For Spousal Benefits Denied?

Hi Larry,

My wife filed for her Social Security retirement benefit in 2016 at age 64 and I filed for a spouse benefit on her benefit at the same time at age 66 (My full retirement age). Her current benefit is $1,188 and my PIA is $1,366 which is more than her current benefit. Now, I am age 70 and filed and received my full SS benefit. However, my wife's application for a spouse benefit against my SS benefit which would be more than her current benefit was denied? What am I missing?

Am I Entitled To To Collect Half Of My Husband's Benefit At Age 63?

My husband will collecting his social security in December, he is 66 and 2 months, I turned 63 in August. am I entitled to collect half his benefit.

Hi. No. Unreduced spousal benefits are calculated based on 50% of the worker's primary insurance amount (PIA), and PIAs are the amount that the worker qualifies for if they start drawing at full retirement age (FRA). But, you must be at least FRA to be able to qualify for an unreduced spousal benefit.
