Will My Plan Work?

My DOB 4/30/1952. My wife's 11/6/1956. Wife's benefit less than mine but over 50% of mine. I am still working. My plan is to have my wife apply for early benefits at age 62. Later that year, when I turn 66, I will file a restricted application for spousal benefits only, with the intent of changing to my own benefit at age 70.
Will this still work?
Thanks

What Are My Options With Regard To Social Security?

I am 52 years old. My wife passed away one year ago at age 53. Both she and I have worked and contributed to Social Security all of our adult lives. We each earned close to 40 thousand gross income annually for the past ten to fifteen years. I am now trying to plan for my future retirement. I have no plans to remarry, but who can say? I would like to know what my options are regarding social security. I appreciate any information you can offer,
Robert

Hi Robert,

I'm sorry for your loss.

How Should I File My Restricted Application For Spousal Benefits?

Dear Larry,
In short -
1. Husband (BD-1/49)with higher earnings retired at FRA (66) and is receiving benefits. He also still works. His PIA is $2040. ( but MC is taken out making paid benefit $1907 per mo.)
2. I, the lower earning but still-working spouse (BD-10/31/51) applied for and received Medicare starting 10/1/16. I pay for my Medicare quarterly. It is now mid-July 2017 and I am w/in 2 & 1/2 mo. of reaching FRA. I have no intention of taking RIB until I reach 70 yrs.

Can My Husband File On His Own Record At FRA And Switch To Spousal Benefits When I File?

Hello - I am almost 59 and my husband almost 65. I am the higher income earner. Can my husband start his own SS benefits at his FRA and then when I start my own SS benefits in roughly 7-8 years, can he switch to the spousal benefit as half of mine at that time will be more than what he gets on his own? Thank you!

Can I Suspend My Benefits And Collect On My Ex-Wife's Record?

I began taking Social Security at 62 for $1800 I am now 65. I would like to know if I can suspend my benefits now , and collect on my ex-wife's Social Security benefit ,( she is 66 making 1500/ mo on a disability SS), then restart mine at 70

Hi,

No, you can't. You could suspend your benefits at age 66 and resume them at a 32% higher rate age 70, but you wouldn't be able to draw divorced spousal benefits while your benefits are suspended.

Best, Jerry

Is It True That I Could Get A Retroactive Lump Sum Payment?

I filed for my DOE on June 17th 2017. I was inform by my SSA claims specialist that since I am at full retirement age (DOB: 9/12/48) I could change my DOE to 1/2017 and receive a retro active lump sum benefit of $9200.00. Is That true? Why not wait another 15 months and file then or just filer now. I am in good health. Or just file get the process going. I could die tomorrow!!!
