What Should We Do?

my husband is in the hospital with major surgery coming in 2 days he is 62 but didnt want to take early ss but now we are living pay check to paycheck he will probably never be able to work again in the same field or maybe he will not be able to work at all as per the dr we need to pay rent etc asap and i do not have the money coming in now so what is his bet way to go so we can get money fast ss disability? or just early ss @ 62 now thanks

Hi,

First off, best wishes with your husband's surgery.

Your husband could file for reduced retirement benefits or disability benefits or both. However, filing for reduced retirement benefits would mean a lower monthly benefit rate for him, and potentially for you in the event that you are widowed. Social Security disability benefits are not reduced, but they aren't paid for the first 5 months after a person becomes disabled and stops doing substantial work. So, they are unlikely to provide you with any immediate income.

You may want to consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to help you determine your best course of action.
