Can I Claim A Spousal Benefit And Defer My Own Retirement Benefit Until Age 70?

Hi Larry,
My wife is 64 and currently receives a Social Security Disability benefit. When she turns 66 in 2019, her benefits will convert to retirement benefits. At that time, I will also be at FRA but will have yet to claim my own retirement benefit. At the time her disability benefit converts to a retirement benefit, can I claim a spousal benefit to receive 1/2 of her benefit and defer my own retirement benefit until age 70?

Should My Husband File For Spoual Benefits Or Early SS While Waiting For A Decision On His SSDI Claim?

I am 66 my husband is 63. I have applied and will be receiving full SS in July this year. I am the lower income spouse. My husband has applied for SSDI and was told he could apply for early SS while waiting for a decision on his SSDI (which is at 2nd stage). He is 100% disabled US Veteran. Should he apply to take spousal benefits while waiting for decision on SSDI or should he reply for early SS? He plans to apply now for SS to start when he is 63 in Sept. What will happen once (if) he is approved for SSDI will he automatically go on SSDI? Thank you.

Am I Entitled To A Retroactive Payment If I Turn Age 66 In July?

If I turn 66 in July am I entitled to a retroactive payment of benefits starting in January of that year.

Hi,

No, you cannot be paid retirement benefits retroactively (i.e. prior to your month of filing) for any months prior to the month you reach full retirement age. To get benefits for January in your scenario you'd have to file your retirement benefit application no later than January, and your benefit rate would then be reduced for age.

Are There Other Options?

I'm a 63 year old male in good health and still working my wife is 67 years old and receiving SS ($ 1250 / month). My FRA is 66. I know I can either 1: Apply for SS and keep on working 2: My wife apply for 50% of mine ( while I stay working) while still receiving her full retirement 3:
apply and suspend till 70 and receive complete benefit. My question is are there other options ? Thanks.

Can I Take Spousal Benefits At FRA And Allow My Own Rate To Grow Even If My Own Rate Would Be Higher?

Hello,
I was born 11/1/53 and my husband born 6/1/51. He is earning DRC since last June 2017. In 11/19 when I am 66 I will restrict my app to spousal only and my husband will start collecting his benefit at the same time. If my FRA at 66 is a little more than 1/2 of my husband's FRA that I will be entitled to, can I still take 1/2 of his and let mine earn DRC till I am 70. Thank you.

Can I File For My Benefits Now And Switch To Full Widow's Benefits Later?

I am 63 years old (DOB 2/1955) , my social security benefits: Now (June 2018) $700/month. At full retirement age (66 y, 2 m) $863/month. At age 70: $1,128/month.

My husband (DOB 11/1956, DOD 4/2018) recently passed away and I was told by someone at SS on the phone that my widow's benefit now is $2,532/month. At my full retirement age (they told me 66, but I've read 66 + 2 mos) my widow's benefit will be $2,926/month. The person on the phone told me to wait until 66 y.o. to collect the $2,926/month.

Can My Husband Delay His Social Security And Collect Spousal Off Of Mine?

I just read your book and my head is spinning and am more confused. Question: I reach FRA 66 in Sept/2018 to collect $2488. I plan on filing at FRA. My husband will reach FRA 66 in Feb 2019 to collect $2200. He plans to continue to work. Can he delay his and collect spousal off mine? If yes, approximately how much would he collect...50% or would it be less?

Can I Postpone Getting My Social Security Until Age 70 But Get Half Of What My Husband Was Receiving Now?

My husband of 40 years passed away 2 years ago and I am about to turn 66. I was wondering if I could postpone getting my social security until I was 70 but take half of what my husband was receiving before he died.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.
