When Can My Wife Claim A Spousal Benefit?

Hello, Larry. My wife is receiving her social security benefit. She will do better when I file and she can take a spousal benefit. However, I am considering filing a restricted application in September, when I turn FRA and take a 50% spousal benefit while working full time. My question is, when can my wife claim a spousal benefit for her? Can she take it when I file my restricted application at full retirement age or must she wait until I begin taking my benefits down the road, perhaps up to age 70? Thank you for your advice. Steve

Can My Husband Draw Half Of My Benefit Amount When I Reach Full Retirement Age?

My husband started collecting his social security at age 66, his full retirement age. He gets $1005 a month.
When I turn 66.5, my full retirement age, (born in 1957) my earnings will be about $2745. Can my husband,
then file and claim 1/2 my benefits, which would be about $1372 a month. If so, do I also have to start collecting at 66.5, or can I file and and suspend mine until I turn 70 when my payment would be about $3514 a month.

Can I Switch From My Record To A Spousal Benefit When My Husband Files For His Benefits At Age 70?

I was born in 1956 and my husband in 11/1953. I plan to file for social security this year, 2019. At this time, My husband will file a restricted application and collect half of my social security benefit. When he turns 70 he will file and collect his own social security benefit. At his age 70, half of his social security benefit is more than my mine, can I switch to a spousal benefit when he turns 70 and files?

When Do I Need To File To Receive An Entire Year Of Credits?

Dear Larry,
I turn 69 this October 2019 and have not filed for SS. My wife turns 67 February 2020. When do I need to file for benefits to receive an entire year of credits, my income will be negligible in 2019? We are planning to wait for another year or two before my wife files. Would you recommend that strategy?
FYI I’m a BU graduate CFA 73.
Thank you
Michael

Are There Still Changes We Could Make To Our SS At Our Age?

My husband and I are beyond the age of 70 and taking our own SS benefits. At our age, are there still changes that could be made if better options are found?

Hi,

Probably not. Social Security claims are limited to no more than 6 months of retroactivity, so if you did at one time have better options it would likely be too late to change course.

Could My Wife Get Spousal Benefits Based On My SSDI?

I am 54 and on SSDI. My spouse is 64 and working. Can she get a spousal benefit from my SSDI, and can she do this while working? Her plan has been to file and suspend her benefits at age 66, to collect the max amount at 70. My understanding is that my SSDI will convert to retirement at 67. She will be on her max social security by then and we are blessed to have supplemental retirement investments to help support us. Could I suspend my social security after it converts from SSDI, to try to maximize my benefit? Please advise, thank you.

We plan to retire when I turn 65 and her 62 then return to live in Ireland. I understand there’s a agreement between Ireland and US. Money will be Very tight. Irish pension is very small. So may work until 67 any advice on our plans is greatly appreciated.
