Ask Larry

Is Your Book Up To Date?

I turn 66 before the end of the month. My sister had me all excited about the apply and suspend rules, now I see that ship has sailed even before I was thinking about boarding. My husband is already collecting but a lower rate than I will qualify for. I hope to work until 70, but still wondering if there is anything I can collect now to increase my earnings. I did just order your book, but am concerned it is outdated already. Do you have plans to have any type of supplement for those of us that bought a book that is now, or soon going to be outdated?

Hi,

Assuming that you ordered the revised version of the book (http://www.getwhatsyours.org/) issued in 2016, you'll find that it's fully up to date with the current Social Security laws. Furthermore, the changes in the file and suspend rules shouldn't affect your filing strategy if your husband is drawing his benefits. Assuming he is, you can choose to file an restricted application for just spousal benefits only and receive those benefits for 4 years before switching to your own record at age 70.

You may want to consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to make sure that you choose the best possible filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
