Would My Disability Be Taken Away If I Sell My Home?

I’m on disability and I was just wondering if my disability would be taken away if I sold my home? It is just to much for me to take care of anymore and was considering selling it but I can’t afford to have my disability taken away.

Hi. The answer to your question depends on what type of benefits you receive. If you're receiving any type of Social Security benefits, including disability benefits, then selling your home would have absolutely no effect at all on your benefits. But, if you're receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then selling your home could put you over the resource limit and cause your payments to stop. The resource limit for SSI eligibility is $2000, but the value of a home in which you live isn't counted toward the limit. However, if you sell your home, the proceeds that you receive from the sale would count toward the resource limit unless you use those proceeds to purchase a new home within 3 months.
