Would I Be Eligible For Widow's Benefits?

I retired in 2003 at age 61 due to complications from Lupus. I applied for Social Security benefits with disability which was approved. My husband died in 2000 at age 59. I just learned of widow’s benefits. Would I be eligible for that?

Hi,

Potentially, yes, but you would only be able to draw widow's benefits if your widow's benefit rate is higher than the benefit rate that you are currently receiving on your own record. You could only be paid essentially the higher of those 2 benefit rates, not both. It sounds like you should contact Social Security as soon as possible to see if you are eligible for widow's benefits.

Best, Jerry
