Ask Larry

Would I Be Eligible To Claim Social Security Early Because Of Being My Wife's Caregiver?

Hi Larry,
I have been taking care of my disabled wife since 1993. I am 57 and can retire from my civil service job with 25 yrs of service in June of 2018. planned on taking my s.s.retirement benefits at 62. some people have told me I may be eligible to get my s.s. benefits early.. because of being my wife caregiver..she has been collecting s.s.i. disability sine 93. Is that possible or do I have to wait until im 62 ?? Thank you..Jim

Hi Jim,

No, there's no such thing as early Social Security eligibility based on caring for a spouse. There is child in care spousal benefit for spouses who have a child of the worker in their care who is under age 16 or disabled, but it doesn't sound like that applies in your case.
