Will Returning To Part-Time Work Affect My Disability Benefits?

I have been receiving ssdi for about 10 I had to leave work because of a back injury/ That limit my ability to work or do any heaving lifting. I was offered a job taking people to doctor appointments which is only 3 or 4 hour a day. Will it affect my disability if I tried to do this job?

Hi,

Eventually it would if you end up earning an average of more than $1180 per month. People receiving Social Security disability benefits (SSDI) are eligible for a 9 month trial work period during which they can earn any amount without losing their benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10095.pdf). But after the trial work period is completed, SSDI benefits are subject to termination if the disabled individual performs substantial gainful activity (SGA). The current SGA guideline is $1180 per month, so you would likely be okay as long as your earnings don't exceed that level.

If you do return to work, be sure to notify Social Security and retain proof of your monthly earnings.

Best, Jerry
