Will My Wife's SSI Be Cut A Specific Amount When I Take Social Security?

My wife is blind & on ssi.... my question is will her ssi be cut a certain dollar amount when i take my social security..she is 61 now & i am 64 now & will probably be taking my ss @ 66.

Hi,

Assuming that you mean Supplemental Security Income when you refer to SSI and you and your wife live together, then your wife's payments could be affected by any changes in your income and/or resources. The dollar amount change would depend on the level of change in your income. Also, changes in the type of income you receive (i.e. earned vs. unearned) could affect your wife's SSI.

For more information on SSI, refer to Social Security's website: https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/.

On the other hand if your wife is receiving Social Security disability benefits (SSDI), those benefits would not be reduced when you start receiving your Social Security. That might also open up a number of other potential filing options for you, so you should consider using the maximization software on this website to explore your options and determine your best strategy.

Best, Jerry
