Will My Social Security Go Up When My Ex-Wife Starts Receiving Benefits?

iam 66 and started my ss retirement in july.i was married for18 years.my ex wife is 53yrs.when she starts receiving her ss retirement will my benefit increase?

Hi,

If you do qualify for divorced spousal benefits when your wife files for her benefits, you wouldn't start getting them automatically. You would need to file a claim in order to potentially become entitled to divorced spousal benefits. And, you will only qualify for divorced spousal benefits if 50% of your ex-wife's full retirement age rate (PIA) is higher than your own PIA.

Best, Jerry
