Will My Husband Be Eligible For Spousal Benefits When I Retire?

My husband began taking SS benefits when he turned 62 (he is now 66). His benefit is 707 per month. I am now 64 and will take my SS benefits when I am 67. My benefit at 66, as calculated now, will be 1543. Is there any benefit to my husband to take spousal benefits when I retire? Thanks.

Hi,

Probably not. Your husband would only be entitled to additional spousal benefits if 50% of your full retirement age rate (PIA) is higher than his own PIA. If your husband started drawing his benefits at age 62 and now receives $707 monthly, his PIA is likely around $935. So, if your PIA is $1543, it doesn't sound like your husband could qualify for any spousal benefits.

However, since you were apparently born prior to January 2 1954, you could file just for spousal benefits only at age 66 and allow your own benefit rate to grow until age 70. It sounds like that would likely be your best overall filing strategy, but you may want to use the maximization software available on this website to be sure.

Best, Jerry
