Will My Girlfriend Lose Her Widow's Benefits If We Get Married?

im 73, my girl friend is 76. we want togged married and not live in sin. what happens to her SS?
She is a widow and didn't work very much so her personal amount is very low. I can't provide for both of us if she loses her husbands benefits. what options do we have.

Hi,

If your girlfriend receives Social Security widow's and/or retirement benefits, getting married wouldn't have any effect on her benefits since she is over age 60 (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0406.html).

Best, Jerry
