Will My Domestic Partnership Affect My Ability To Receive Widow's Benefits?

Hi Larry I have a question I. 61 and i work part time I was planning to take my widows benifits next June when I'm 62 it'll be 1700 a month I also am dating someone who put me on his medical threw his work . But we had to fill out demestic partner ship papers will this affect my widows benifits thank you cindee

Hi Cindee,

No, being involved in a domestic partnership would not bar you from potentially receiving widow's benefits on a deceased husband's record. Even a remarriage occurring at age 60 or later would have no effect on your potential entitlement to widow's benefits.

I should also point out that you could potentially qualify for widow's benefits even before age 62, although your benefit rate would be reduced in return for the earlier entitlement. And, if you are also insured for Social Security retirement benefits based on your own work record, you likely have numerous options with regard to filing for benefits. You may want to strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to be sure that you choose the best filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
