Will My Deceased Brother Receive A Payment For September?

My brother died on 9/28. Will he receive payment for Sept. We have already notified the bank so I know that the bank will send the money back but is he entitled to any money. He had no surviving children or spouse just brother and sister. We have some of his bills to pay. No estate or anything like that, he basically had nothing. Thank you in advance for your help and assistance.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately the answer is no, your brother would not be due a Social Security payment for September (i.e. the benefit that Social Security would normally pay in October). No Social Security benefits are payable for the month of a person's death, even if the person dies at 11:59 PM on the last day of a month.

It doesn't sound like anyone could qualify for survivor benefits on your brother's record, unless he was married in the past and has a divorced spouse or he has a surviving parent who was dependent on him for support. Social Security formerly paid a one time $255 lump sum death benefit but now only does so if there is a surviving spouse or eligible child (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/survivors/ifyou.html#h7).

Best, Jerry
