Will I Still Be Able To Collect Survivor Benefits When I Reach Full Retirement Age?

I am 62 years old and started collection Survivor Benefits at 60. When I reach full retirement age will I still be able to collect the Survivor Benefit? If so will I be able to collect at 70 if I can wait that long to retire? I know my benefit will be much higher at 70. Thanking you in advance for your time.

Hi,

Yes, you could continue to receive your survivor benefits indefinitely. However, if your own Social Security retirement benefit rate is higher than your survivor rate you could switch to your own record at any time. Assuming that your own rate is higher, though, it would probably be best to wait until age 70 to make the switch. Age 70 is when your retirement benefit would reach it's highest possible rate, so waiting until then to switch would give you your highest possible monthly rate for the rest of your life.

Best, Jerry
