Will I Get An Additional Spousal Benefit When My Husband Files?

I am 63 now and was taking my ssa since 62 at 750.00 per month. Husband is being told he can get 500.00 for a spousal benefit now off of my record. Being I took my monies early, what would be my spousal benefit if he takes his ssa at 67 years of age at about 2400 per month.
Every time we go into office we get different answers to our questions. Do I get anything additional for spousal benefitwhen he claims his own benefit?

Hi,

When your husband files for benefits on his own record, your unreduced spousal rate will be calculated by subtracting your full retirement age rate (PIA) from 50% of your husband's PIA. But, if you become entitled to spousal benefits before you reach your full retirement age (FRA), your spousal rate will be reduced for age. Whatever you qualify for as a spouse will then be added to your reduced retirement benefit.

For example, Mary has a full retirement age rate (PIA) of $1000 but starts drawing reduced retirement benefits at age 62 at a rate of $750. Mary's husband files for his benefits when Mary is age 67, and his PIA is $2200. Mary is eligible for an excess spousal benefit of $100 (i.e. $2200/2 - $1000), which would be added to her reduced retirement benefit to give her a combined rate of $850.

Based on the information listed in your question it sounds like your best strategy may be for your husband to draw spousal benefits on your record until he reaches age 70 and then switch to his own record. You could then file for spousal benefits when he switches to his own record. However, you should strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to make sure you choose the best possible strategy.

Best, Jerry
