Will I Be Entitled to Any Benefits On My First Husband's Record?

my 1st husband has cancer n only has a month to live we were married 14 years, i been divorced from him 12 years n have been remarried 3 times and am currently still married to my last husband but been seperated 5 years n about to file for divorce, will i be entitled to any widow, spousal, or any benefits from my 1st husband when he passes away? we have no children together.

Hi,

Unless you remarried at age 60 or older, you couldn't be eligible for surviving divorced spousal benefits on your first husband's record unless and until you get divorced. You would also need to be at least age 60, or at least age 50 and disabled, in order to potentially qualify for survivor benefits on his account (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0403.html).

If you've worked long enough to be insured on your own record, and/or if you were married for at least 10 years to any of your other spouses or if any of your marriages ended in death, then you may have a number of different filing options available to you. You may want to consider using the maximization software available on this website to explore your options and determine your best filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
