Ask Larry

Will I Be Able To Collect Social Security?

I plan on retiring age 65 yrs from a govt job. My monthly checks will be approximately 6200. I also qualify for full SS at 66yrs 4 months. Will I be able to collect on that?

Hi,

Yes, assuming that you have at least 40 quarters of Social Security coverage. However, if your earnings at your government job were exempt from Social Security taxes then your Social Security retirement benefit rate may be lower than normal due to the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). For more information on WEP, refer to this Social Security publication: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10045.pdf.

You should strongly consider using our maximization software before you file in order to compare your options and determine your best strategy.
