Why Is Social Security Changing My Payment Date?

i HAVE BEEN GETTING MY CHECKS ON THE 2nd OF THE MONTH FOR ABOUT 11 yrs. WHY ARE THEY CHANGING THE DATE? LIKE MOST I LIVE CHECK TO CHECK. MY RENT IS DUE ON THE 1st OF THE MONTH. MY LAND LORD HAS BEEN OK WITH GETTING IT LATE BY ONE DAY. I DOUBT THEY WILL FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS. JIM

Hi Jim. I don't have enough information about your status to know why you were apparently getting paid on the 2nd day of the month nor why that date is changing. Social Security doesn't normally pay benefits on the 2nd day of a month. Most people are now paid either on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, or the 3rd or 4th Wednesday depending on their day of birth (https://www.ssa.gov/kc/rp_paybenefits.htm). Social Security used to pay all benefits on the 3rd day of each month, but that was changed in 1997. The only people who are still paid benefits on the 3rd day of the month are people who were already receiving benefits prior to May 1997, or beneficiaries who are living outside of the country, or people who are eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

SSI is a needs based payment administered by Social Security, and those payments are made on the 1st day of each month. If an SSI recipient is also eligible for Social Security benefits then their Social Security benefits are paid on the 3rd day of the month.

Best, Jerry
