Why Is My Payment Date Changing?

I have been getting my social security for years now on the 3rd of the month and pay my rent then. Why has it changed? If I don't get it the second Wed. Of the month I'm going to have to pay a late payment. I'm 78 yes old and get under $1300 a month and live from pay check to pay check. HELP!

Hi. I don't know whether or not your payment date will change, but the Social Security regulations that determine when people are paid their benefits haven't changed since 1997. Since that time, the only people who should be receiving their payments on the 3rd day of the month are people who a) applied for benefits prior to April 30 1997, or b) also receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, or c) are residing outside of the U.S. (https://www.ssa.gov/kc/rp_paybenefits.htm). If you don't meet one of those exceptions, then your Social Security benefits would normally be paid on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month.

The current Social Security regulations regarding payment dates were passed into law by Congress in 1997, and only Congress has the power to amend that law. So, if you have concerns or questions about these regulations you should contact your representatives in Congress to let them know of your concerns.

Best, Jerry
