Why Did My Children Get An Extra Payment This Month?

My children's father died a little over a year ago..they receive benefits on the third Wednesday of the month. This month I noticed an extra pavement on the fifth of the month. I have received no letters from social security explaining
Is this something that is normal?

Hi,

A number of readers have reported receiving extra payments on October 5th of this year. This is about the time of the year that Social Security runs automated benefit recalculations, so I'm guessing that the extra payment is back pay due as the result of a recalculation of your husband's benefit rate. In your case, the children's benefits were likely initially computed without your husband's 2015 earnings, and they are now due a higher rate due to a recalculation to include those earnings.

You should receive a notice from Social Security explaining the payments within a week to 10 days. Although direct deposits can be issued overnight, it takes longer for snail mail.

Best, Jerry
